JessieJ’s story – so it begins

#1 Post by JessieJ »

I am new and wanted to introduce myself!

I am 22 years old from Victoria, Australia. I have known for years and years that I needed braces and now that I have the funds have decided to take the plunge.

The first orthodontist I went to kind of turned me off, first impression = they booked me under the wrong name and I thought I had taken the day off work for nothing. But became worse when I faced the fact on how bad my teeth really are and the plan of attack. After getting a price with him I thought it best to get a second opinion just incase.

The second orthodontist’s office was really nice, professional and although the plan remained the same, almost. It was also a little cheaper, so I have given them the tick of approval.

Although it doesn’t look like I will be getting braces towards the end of the year, I came across this site in my research and I love it. There is sooo much info on here and even the bad parts are forgotten once you see the end result. That is what I am hoping for, which is why I wish I didn’t have to wait so long.

The Plan:
2 weeks – getting my molds done at the Orthodontist’s office

September (first available date) – consulation with oral surgeon to run through exactly what is involved, for pulling out 10 of my teeth!!!!! arghhh yes I know it seems like a lot. This is two baby canines, four wisdom teeth and four teeth second from the back (sorry I still don’t know the lingo).
This means that I am going to have two gaps in the front of my mouth until the adult teeth are pulled into their place.
Then in this consultation we can book the date of removal, who knows how long that will be, as it is two month wait for consultation.

2-3 weeks after removal of teeth, braces go on.

So that’s the plan, although I am not to excited to get the teeth out I keep telling myself that it will be all worth it in the end.

If anyone has had any similar experiences I would be happy to hear.

I will let you know how I go at the surgeon’s appt, only 70 days to go! (not that I’m counting haha)

Til then, Jess

Good luck with everything, hope your not in too much pain.

Hi and welcome. I'm a newbie also. I got my braces on June 29th and so far the braces are not that bad. The worst part for me is the bite turbos. I know I said I wanted to lose weight but not being able to chew really sucks. Good luck to you with your surgery.

Sunshine14 - hahah i am so new that i just had to google bite turbos, they don't sound like fun. Do you know how long you have to have them for.

Yes I said losing a bit of weight after getting the teeth out would be good, but no doubt I will just be craving food. Luckily my fav thing is ice cream, but too much of that wont help with losing weight haha!

Thanks I will update with some photos before and after the surgery.

Hope the chewing gets easier for you!

Jess-I understand. I have actually been learning more about them through members of this site. At this point, I do not know how long I will have to have them. I guess it depends on how long it takes my bite to improve. I am an ice cream fanatic too but you are right eating too much would take me in the wrong direction as far as the weight so I am gonna try yogurt.

yes i think yoghurt is definately a great 2nd alternative!!

I went in a got my molds done yesterday, it was like I had a mouth full of play dough! Once she had finished, she said I could go rinse my mouth out. I got to the mirror and didn't realise I had it all over my mouth, lips and bottom of my face!

Now I just have to wait and see how long it will take to get into the surgeon!

I had 8 teeth pulled including 4 premolars (third from back) and 4 wisdom teeth- don't worry about the extractions. A lot of people say that it makes your mouth or lips smaller, but I got a ton of extractions and my lips and chin and look the same size and shape, just more symmetrical.

All that I can say about your treatment plan is DO IT!

IT IS SO WORTH IT!!!

Also- I was braced for two years and even though my extracted teeth were mismatched, I never had build-ups or bite turbos. It's different for everyone.

And you don't look so much like a hillbilly when you've got braces bridging the gaps. It just looks like you have braces. A lot of people never even noticed my premolars were gone until I told them. And it is amazing how fast canines can come down once they have some space to move into. Like I said, it's different with everyone, but I wish you the best of luck in your case!

shinyRiver – thanks for your post! your story was the first one I read when I came on, I love your attitude on braces and congrats on braces off your teeth look awesome. Perfect for the wedding! I just got engaged so am planning a longer engagement so hopefully the teeth will be done by the big day

I have heard a lot of people talking about changes in mouth and lips but I’m not really worried about it, just want them out the sooner the better so I can started. Will find out how long the waiting list is in September, I really hope it is a bit before XMAS cause I don’t want to miss out on eating then haha

As for the gaps I was really worried at first but that is exactly what the orthodontist told me, I think it will just be the feeling of having teeth missing rather than the look.

Yes I am a bit excited to see the canines coming down into their home position, where they belong!

Thanks and congrats again on your teeth :P
