Embarking on a new journey with braces

Hi everyone! I just got my ceramic braces on two days ago and am slowly getting used to them.

It was something that I should have done in my teenage years but somehow had managed to put it off for years with excuses. I'm turning 25 in December and decided to take the plunge when I realised that I did not want to live with the regret of not getting braces.

I have a class 1 bimaxillary potrusion and crossbite with overcrowding on top and slight overcrowding on the bottom arch. As you probably would have guessed, my ortho recommended 4 bicuspid removal. When I mentioned that I had a fear of face thinning, she provided me with the option to have a trial of 6 months with the braces on and if she has no spaces to move my teeth, I would have to get all 4 bis extracted (she was quite adamant that the potrusion would get worst after the alignment). Nevertheless, I went ahead with the extraction and am now wondering if I should have just waited and see:( Owh well, nothing I can do about it now.

I think I went the whole pre-braces route:P Extractions and spacers. I probably am one of the lucky few who had no issues with my spacers aside from a slight annoyance of having something stuck between my teeth. No painkillers so far and I've been on a soft diet since the spacers were in which makes this the eighth day (Had spacers in for 5 days) that I have had nothing but chocolate milk and porridge...

So....yeap...that's about the beginning of my braces journey :D It's only been 3 days in but I really can't wait to see improvement! Thanks for reading!

Food pack is definitely one of the worst conditions to contend with; a Waterpik is a great tool for when you are at home.

Hi Juppiejux,

Getting my lower ceramics next week. A little nervous...actually alot!

Your teeth look pretty good already from where im sitting. Congrats on getting started..
I too should have done this years ago, i am only finally, at 26, getting started! How much does it hurt??? The truth! How is your lower lip handling it?

rhomboid: I'm still searching high and low for waterpik :(

ShySmile: Good luck in getting braced :) Don't be nervous, it will be over before you know it. For me it didn't really hurt that much. Just felt immense pressure for the first two days. I talked a lot at work yesterday so I've developed a canker sore on my inner bottom lip. I'm using a lot of wax right now, truly god sent in situations like this. I have a class 1 bimaxillary protrusion so it's not really obvious from the front, only from the side.

mama2cute: Thanks a lot! There's slight movement, I think hahahahha

*Update* The ortho couldn't get the metal band onto my bottom right molar because it's 1/4 hidden by gums so she used a tube instead. It fell off this morning because I was biting on it. Made an emergency appointment and got a new tube bonded in it's place. Fingers crossed that it doesn't fall out again!

ShySmile: Forgot one more teeny little detail that helped me a whole lot during the procedure. Slather on lots of gloss or paw paw ointment. This will keep your lips from drying out when the ortho places the front brackets on. My ortho gave me a lot of Vaseline but by the end of it, I didn't feel any of the Vaseline left on my lips, so you can imagine :)

Juppiejux- Had my lower ceramics fitted yesterday and only the brackets of my upper linguals.
At work today, i feel like ive been beat up. It hurts! Mostly my jaw and back two molars. No pain in the front teeth...SO FAR. Im sure it will creep up on my tomorrow.

Took my paw paw ointment with me yesterday! My ortho told me thats what his wife puts on his babys bottom for nappy rash

It's been a month! Went for my first adjustment on the 20th of November and the ortho tightened my wires around my canines to pull them further back and also changed the archwire to a stiffer one. She's pretty happy with the movement of my teeth so I hope that this will shorten the predicted two years :D Noticed that most of the movement was in my right canine and gaps have formed on my bottom canines. Not too much discomfort after the first adjustment so I'm a pretty happy person. Can't wait till the next appointment!

Can't believe that I've been in braces for 2 years 1 month and 5 days! Time just swooped by and honestly I really miss my braces. Happy with the new smile though :D I got both upper and lower permanent retainers bonded on 6 of both upper and lower teeth on the day that I got my braces off. I'll be getting my removable hawley retainers next Tuesday and am really worried that they are really gonna hurt when I put them on so fingers crossed! I was nervous the whole week leading up to day of debanding. I was constantly worried that I would sit in the chair and she would say "Not yet" but the day came and that didn't happen. She did a final check and was happy that all the gaps have closed and just proceeded to bond my permanent retainers before removing my grills. Here's a picture of my new smile as compared to my teeth on day 1 of braces!

Congratulations for getting them off! Your smile looks amazing  Gives me incentive to keep mine on (currently in the "what was I thinking" patch, I'm sure it will pass).

Can I ask how the bonding behind the teeth feels? I have to have that done too.
