Drgnchsr36's Deep Bite Adventures

#1 Post by drgnchsr36 »

Well, here's a bit of my story. I'll probably repeat a bit of what I said in an earlier post. I was one of those lucky ducks that never had braces as a kid. I used to wish I did, since all my friends had braces. I have pretty straight teeth - which is a blessing! I used to get asked all the time if I had braces and I'd say no. As I got older, I'd lie sometimes and say yes .. since I was pretty tired of being asked the question. :P Silly, I know.

Anyways, I recently changed dentists and I wanted to speak to him about a nightguard since I grind my teeth quite a bit. He took one look and stated that the nightguard would help, but not solve my issue. That I really needed to see an orthodontist for my deep bite. I was shocked!! No other dentist picked up on that issue. I've had an overbite since I was a child, but it was never terrible and I think therefore ignored since my teeth weren't crowded or whatnot. He stated I'd run into several issues as I get older, including grinding my teeth down and having gum issues. Also, a deep bite only gets worse as time goes on if not fixed.

So, I went to a few orthodontist consultations and eventually chose the one that was referred to me by my dentist. She was great in answering all my questions, didn't rush me into anything and her staff was also terrific in having patience with me calling up and asking questions every few days. It turns out that braces will resolve the deep bite issue, as well as a misalignment on my right side and a bit of crowding (tiny bit) on my bottom teeth.

Before I even went to the consults, I had to get my top two wisdom teeth pulled. Thankfully, I was only born with top ones. Even the oral surgeon commented on how deep my bite was. I felt lame that none of the other dentists ever picked up on it.

.. so this is where I get a tad repeative... I got my top ceramic braces on this morning, along with the molds, x-rays and pictures. Once I get the pictures, I'll add them to the post. My teeth aren't as white as most I've seen here, so that's something I'll work on after the braces are off. I won't be getting my bottom metal brackets until my top teeth move out and up. There's no space right now when I close my mouth to have the brackets on my bottom teeth. I'm not really looking forward to the cement when that happens on the back molars. At least right now, my bite feels the same - in regards to eating. I have a somewhat gummy smile, but I don't mind it. Especially after I saw the surgery that would be involved to fix it.

The process of getting my braces wasn't terrible at all. It wasn't painful. The worst or hardest thing for me was biting down on the suction tool that kept my mouth dry. I felt like I was clinching my jaw.. after the wire was in, I felt a bit of pressure but no pain!! Happy about that. :) They gave me plenty of goodies to take care of my teeth, including a new electric toothbrush. I'll have to try it out tonight. I'm a tad worried about flossing, but I'll see how that goes with the floss threader. I choose silver ligs, so I'll see how well they withstand staining. I'm drinking tea and drinks through a straw now. The real test will be the pasta, Dr. Pepper (from time to time), tea and possible curry.

The only pain that I've had really are two brackets on either side rubbing my lips raw. Once I placed the wax on, life was good again. I did take tylonol, just in case. I'll probably continue to do so tonight and tomorrow. I'll play it by ear. I'm curious if the pressure I feel on my teeth will be like this all the time? Or just when they tighten or change out the archwire. I also learned that I need to stop running my tongue over the brackets, some of those things are sharp!!! So, the countdown of 24 months begins today!

I'll try and post pictures soon.

@Grillz: good luck next week! It shouldn't be too bad. Altho, I'm curious if it's more painful to have both put on or not? Not the process, but afterwards.
Teeth don't hurt really, but my lips do :/ wax wax wax!!

@Ellebraced: Thanks! I know, I wonder why dentists don't say more.. aww, well.

I do have to say that eating isn't the most comfortable thing to do at the moment. I've gotten used to the braces in general, but eating ..just feels odd still. The pressure on the teeth is a tad distracting and I'm wondering how long that really lasts!

All those posts about flossing being a pain ...was right on. It's the slooooooooooooooooooooowest process ever. I'm using a floss threader and it's taking me a long time. Hope it gets faster in time.

Hoping that the amount of wax I have carries into next week. Good news is that the wax once placed stays really well on my brackets. I ate with them and no issues of it coming off - until I brushed.

Do you all brush you teeth immediately after eating??

About brushing.....

I brush with manual when I wake up.

Then I have coffee and eat. Usually just use the waterpik.

Then have lunch and use waterpik and electric brush.

If I snack I just waterpik

Then have supper and waterpik

Then before bed, I electric brush, sometimes waterpik if I have eaten and floss (usually LOL, depending on how tired I am) and mouthwash

I kind of floss through out the day when I have time, a bit here and there

I don't really point the waterpik at my GUMs most of the time, more at the brackets and the teeth,

I don't want to irritate my mouth. I also try to salt water through out day when I need too.

In case you couldn't tell I LOVE LOVE LOVE the cordless waterpik

Hehehe.. I'm getting that vibe from you that the waterpik is really really good!!! :)

I'll try and test it out next week! I'm excited to use it, but nervous as well. I'm hoping it's not too difficult and I don't make *too* much of a mess with it.

Slight Update: I'm going shopping tonight, so am going to look for the floss that has the pointy end instead of using the floss threader. My right back teeth hurt a bit when biting down, but otherwise they're OK. Pressure is still there .. distracting as heck at work. My brackets.. I'm hoping they get softer over time :p Or my lips adjust. Or I don't run out of wax!!

Elle doesn't speak with forked tongue. That portable Waterpik thing is DA BOMB. Seriously.

I pretty much try to brush within five minutes of whenever I eat anything - but it's a little easier for me because I work from home. When I can't, I swish like mad and I usually have a kit with me to brush in a restroom or in the car when I'm eating out (okay, so it's only happened once, so far).

I think I'll get less squicked out about food in my braces as time goes on. Maybe. It just drives me bonkers. Right now. Heh.

I am with MarciLouWho regarding hygiene habits. I have become crazy-anal retentive about brushing! My new portable Waterpik is getting it's first charge and I am super stoked to use it tomorrow! Flossing is still such a PITA!

With all that I've heard on these boards about a waterpik, I need to look into getting one. I use the Oral-B Super Floss and love it! It's hard at one end, thick and soft in the middle (that can be too thick to fit between some teeth right now but it cleans around brackets really nicely as well) and normal floss at the other end. The only difficultly I have is flossing my back molars with their rings, the floss always seems to get stuck.

@MarciLouWho, wow.. you're much more disciplined than me :) I did brush at work and felt much better after I had Souplantation. Tonight though, I got a tad lazy and didn't brush for about 20 min later. I dread the whole process of taking off the wax and so forth and then re-adjusting the wax afterwards. Also, for some reason, my bottom teeth look worse. Maybe it's just my perception though. My gumline is so bad there :( Probably will need work after the braces.

@~KMG~, I have to try the waterpik soon! I have a feeling my son is going to want to play with it though :P ..and I agree about flossing. It did get better tonight though. I used the threader a bit better, also bought some Crest Glide floss - so great, but I only bought 30. Need more!!

@JennyLaughs, yeah..that type of floss is so much easier to use and faster than with a floss threader. I have a really hard time flossing my back upper teeth :/ I'm afraid I don't do a horribly good job on them.

I was hoping not to lose weight, but I think it's going to happen... at least until I get really organized and fast at cleaning my teeth. I don't snack as much as I used to (maybe that's good).. due to all the teeth cleaning I have to do now.

I also feel like I should buy stock in Crest.. I have a feeling I'm really going to be buying those floss threader thingys in bulk. So nice not to use a threader, when one end of the floss is used as one.

I ate a no-no tonight and regretted it as I was brushing/flossing my teeth. I couldn't help it though, I was craving beef jerky!! But, I kept finding bits of it after brushing and flossing. I even had to re-floss an area where it got stuck really good - also used that skinny mini brush to get the food finally out.

The only thing that's really bugging me are my lips and gums. They're so dry and I can't lick them anymore. I have chapstick in my pocket and constantly use it. I notice if I don't open my mouth for awhile, my cheeks seem to stick to the braces too :/ Not comfy.

Anyone else deal with sensitive gums after being braced? I notice I have some space now between teeth and others are tighter. It's really weird. I bought a really soft brush and try to dry brush my gums - make sure blood is being circulated and I don't miss any areas that plaque could be hanging out in.

Hey Drgnchsr36,

Hello and welcome! My gums were very, very sensitive - red, puffy and angry looking - for about a week after I got braces. Rinsing with saltwater helped, and using the Waterpik on low to massage the sensitive gums also helped. My cheeks tend to stick to my braces only when I'm not hydrated enough, and especially at night. Drinking more water always helps, so you might try that.

I have a Waterpik, and although It works well, I don't use it very often because my cleaning routine is already ridiculously long. As far as flossing goes, I switch back and forth between OralB Super Floss and using regular unwaxed floss tied to a curved plastic threader. Just depends on how my teeth are feeling - gaps open and close all the time, and the OralB Super Floss is pretty thick, so I can't use it between super tight spots. The nice thing about using the floss tied to a threader is I can do it without looking in the mirror.

By far the WORST time of my 4 months in braces was the first 1-2 weeks. My teeth, especially my lower front teeth, ached constantly, and forget biting into anything. That passed, and although I had some sensitivity after my first adjustment, it was a piece of cake comparitively. I have some random sensitivity and achiness that comes and goes as teeth move, but nothing like the first 2 weeks. It will get better, so hang in there! One thing that continues to surprise me, though, is that my cheeks will be just fine for a few weeks, and I start thinking "Yay, my mouth is finally used to all this metal," and then, out of the blue (probably because I started feeling all smug), my cheeks rebel and get irritated, and then I have to use tons of wax for a week or so. What fun!

Thanks for posting your story, I'm looking forward to your future updates!

@BaliGirl, thanks for the welcome! ..and for sharing! It's exactly how it is...my gums are just nice and red up on top. Just feels so odd to brush, but doing my best and hopefully it's OK! I'll ask my ortho next time I go in for an adjustment. Thanks for the input about the water, I'm trying to drink more, especially at night. The worst is first thing in the morning. It's not terrible (not to freak anyone out) - just sorta gotta stretch my mouth and de-stick my cheeks.

I do the same with flossing. I kinda tie it to the threader at home and I'll use the other at work or if I go out to eat. I wish I could get those from my ortho. ;) I do love them, just not realistic for me to use them all the time. Since I use Crest Glide, it's the same floss if I use the threader or not. I really hope one day I'll be able to do my back molars..those teeth are surrounded by metal and I can't quite reach up to the gums. Also, my floss keeps getting caught in those grooves (I think they're for elastics down the line)...

Glad it all gets better in a couple of weeks!! :) Or at least sometime soon. I'm sorta dreading getting my bottom braces on, but hopefully my top won't bother me at the same time (realistic?) - I'm going to definitely stock up on wax, I'm afraid I'll use it my entire treatment!!

@Grillz, I don't have a portable one either... but those mini small brushes that I think your ortho will provide (if not, they sell at the grocery store) is also quite helpful on getting stuff out when not using the waterpik.
