My journey with Six Month Braces

#1 Post by Wendymoon »

So I thought I'd post my story here as I go along. I've had trouble finding much information from people who have done the six month braces thing, so hopefully my experience can help others looking for reviews.

I'm 32, have thought about braces on and off for at least 10 years. I had some crowding since I was a kid, partly due to some issues with a supernumerary tooth which left me with one front baby tooth for a while until I had surgery to remove it and the extra one to make space for my big tooth. I think this compounded a problem with a protruding tooth in front. Then as I got older and my wisdom teeth came in it seemed everything shifted even more and looked worse. :-(

I did consult for traditional braces a couple times, but was reluctant because of the time and money involved. I also went to one office that treated me so awfully; the dentist/ortho didn't listen to my concerns at all, basically told me she wouldn't know anything until they did impressions, and then rushed me to the girl who would check on my insurance to see what I could afford. I did not go back there.

If you haven't heard of them, the idea with 6 month braces is that it's more about fixing the teeth that show when you smile. There are no stronger forces at work. Because the focus is not on making a perfect bite, the treatment is completed in a much shorter time. (In traditional braces, the way I understand it is that the teeth get straightened fairly quickly, then a lot of time is spent tweaking and making the bite just right. Since these braces don't do that, they're not a good fit for ones with major bite issues, although they can help with some bite problems.)

For me, the concern is the crowding, not the bite. The shorter time and less expensive price sold me. In the end, I won't have the perfect bites of you brave souls that are braced for 2 or more years. But I should have a straight smile that looks better and is easier to keep clean. Seems worth it for me to fix the #1 thing I've hated about my appearance for years!

My braces went on 6/16/11. I did need (and will probably still need more) reprox, where they take off a tiny amount on the sides of the teeth to make room for the movement. (With this I shouldn't need any extractions.) The first few days were the worst as I had some teeth pain/soreness and some cuts and sores inside my lips. Wax and painkillers helped a lot, and by the fourth day I was feeling much better.

The hardest thing to get used to has been the bite guards/molar build-ups that were done to keep me from biting down on my brackets. It made chewing at all pretty impossible at first, although I'm adapting now. Also, I went back and got the one side filed down a bit to make them more even, which feels better.

The brackets/ligs are clear/tooth colored (although there are tiny colored dots on the brackets, not sure if they will fade) the wire is white (whiter than my teeth, actually!) so they are not quite as noticeable as a mouthful of metal. But they still feel like a mouthful!

Felt by day 5 I was feeling some movement or at least some loosening of the teeth. No major changes noticed yet in my crowding. I will try and post pictures soon!

Hi, welcome :)
The coloured dots on your brackets will eventually disappear with brushing.

a friend of mine had braces for 6 weeks (WHAT?) to close a gap between her top front teeth. They moved fast and looked great, but she's failed to wear to retainer properly and her teeth are back to how they were after a month.

It also doesn't fix the underlying skeletal problems so you won't have a "natural" retainer when they come off. Those teeth will want to go right back where they started from so make sure to wear your retainer religiously when you get your braces off.

Good luck!
I wish I could have gotten away with 6 month treatment but my bite was an utter mess :(

Congratulations on getting your braces, I'm doing the 6 month smiles braces, which I think is very similar to what you have. I look forward to following your progress!

LeahRuth, thanks for the info on the dots and about the skeletal stuff. My treatment includes bonded retainers, maybe for this very reason of how it would relapse otherwise!

Harriet, thanks for commenting, I'm glad to hear someone else is doing the same thing! I think six month smiles is the same, as is Powerprox, all just slightly different names. I'm looking forward to seeing your progress, too!

Today I had my first adjustment. I meant to take a pain pill before going but forgot. I did have some soreness as my ligs were changed but I've not had pain since and I was eating OK tonight. (By OK I mean soft foods like I've been used to, but it wasn't all liquids like when I first got my braces.)

I've been noticing more space when I floss and some tooth looseness, have had an occasional day of random tooth pain here or there which I am guessing is things shifting. Doc seemed pleased with my changes, no more reprox today and where he had used a wire tie on one bracket the first time he was now able to get a lig on. While flossing before going in today one of those bands came off. So I guess I saved him the hassle of removing one!

Will probably get a thicker wire next time. Right now everything looks so clean and nice! The dots on my brackets have faded but have not disappeared completely yet. Still, I'm happy with the clear braces, people are still just now noticing a month in that I have them on and they look good in pictures.

So, one month down, hopefully only five more to go!

And after:

So stuff is happening!

I can see a big difference. Your upper's are a lot like mine and if you check out my progress photos you'll see that my pesky snaggletooth moved really quick! Hang in there.

Thanks for the encouragement you guys!

While I could tell the difference especially when flossing as space has been opening up, the pictures really helped me reaffirm that there is change happening.

Crazy4Snow, I'm glad I'm not the only one dealing with a snaggletooth! That's exactly what I call mine too! It's started to be real sensitive so I'm guessing it's moving, too. :-)

One more thing, my teeth look crazy yellow in some of those pics above, but I swear it's just the lighting. I will try and do better about that going forward.

I'm back. With an animated gif of my teeth moving.

So it's been about 2.5 months so far. Last adjustment went well. I remembered to take a painkiller before and it definitely helped, though I still had a few moments where a couple of teeth were particularly tender. My teeth are super loose, like if I press gently with my finger I can see them move! It freaks me out a little, frankly.

The doc saved the thicker wire for next time. We looked at my pics and he was quite pleased with how much progress I had made. (I think before looking at the pics he was thinking, wow, still crooked, is this working yet? But really my mouth has changed a lot in a short time.)

My snaggle tooth is finally coming into place. A little edge piece of it came off as I was flossing... I know there was a slight chip there so I guess it was weak? Slightly scary. At the moment it looks shorter than the rest of my teeth but it's also still sticking out a bit so I hope it won't be too bad once everything comes in line. And I have some other little unevenness that I hope we can fix at the end. Anyone know how they do that?

Haven't posted in a bit because I've been feeling slightly sick of my braces. But it's a process! And I hate complaining about my short time when I know a lot of you are in it for the very long haul.

At the moment I've got those little spaces at the gumline. And I'm wondering if teeth take longer to rotate than to move?

Just a couple of weeks until my three month adjustment, then I'll be halfway there!

Shellios, on pricing, for me everything is $3500. Less than I was quoted for traditional braces for sure. The price includes bonded retainers and whitening at the end.

OK, so we're past the three month mark (almost to four!) which should mean I'm more than halfway. At my last adjustment I got a new wire. Teeth have moved a ton. The protruding one up top is still being a problem child. It's come in quite a bit, but is not quite lined up yet. And as it is moving back it seems to be pushing the front tooth next to it out of place. Grr. Sometimes things get worse before they get better, right?

I went in the other day because two of my ligs came off. Already one has come off again. Another grr. Not sure why that particular one just doesn't want to stay on, but it has come off before every adjustment. It used to be just a few days before but with the new wire it's popped off sooner. Not sure if I will try and go in early again or if I will wait the week before my next appointment.

Overall the dentist is pleased with my progress although he's a bit worried that I've developed a slight open bite as things have been moving around. Did that happen to anyone else here? I'm feeling slightly pessimistic and trying to steel myself for things taking longer. The big changes were so exciting, all the changes now are just seeming much slower. Guess we'll see what happens at the next appointment...
