Braces Day 2 - pain not as expected

#1 Post by 44AndWired »

I have a rather large gap between my 2 front teeeth. :GapToothed: I have always wanted to close it but when I was younger, the dentist told me that it could not be done with braces. My son got braces last year, and in talking to his orthodontist, he said that it could be done. After many months I finally got my braces yesterday. I went with the ceramic brackets as oppesed to the metal ones for asthetic purposes. I had heard so many stories about the pain associated with braces the 1st week or so and thought i would need so type of narcotic since I am not good with pain. An hour before getting my braces on I took a percocet to be sure. I really did not feel any discomfort for about 4 hours, after, at which point it was very mild on my bottom front teeth. I was sure that I would wake up this morning in severe pain as I had been told. However, this has not been a bad day. The pain is not what I expected. Actually, the pain only occurs when my top and bottom teeth meet. So as you can imagine eating anything that requires chewing is out of the question. My meals for today has consisted of oatmeal, soup, very small cut up watermelon. This all being said, I am glad to report that it is not constant pain as expected. We will see what tomorrow holds.

Yeah mine haven't hurt at all either. I'm 2 weeks in. The day I got my braces and the day after, I felt some pressure on my teeth, like a rubber band was pulling them tight, but aside from that, the only complaints I have are about my molar build ups making it tough to eat, my one tooth being a lot more loose than the rest (which just sort of creeps me out), and some occasional scratching on my cheeks from the hooks in back.

With the way some people make such a big deal about the sensation, you'd think it was going to be like medieval torture pain. Glad that's not the case. I did go ahead and make a big deal about my loose tooth... but I needed to in order to be comfortable and calm.

Glad to hear that you're easing into things, though!

Thank you. What is a molar build up? Yea, the most anooying this is the brackets scratching my cheeks but I am using wax and will definitely have to buy some more.

Sorry Crazy4Snow. I guess each persons exxperience is different. The only thing that is really still bugging me at this point is the feel of the brackets againts my lips and gums. :FeelSick: I am using the dental wax on the hook parts, but when do you get used tothegeneral feeling of these things in your mouth?

It took me at least 3 weeks to toughen up my cheeks and lips. I don't have to use the wax at all anymore except on a wire tie that needs to be trimmed. I'm still fully aware of the braces, I mean I still feel them on my lips and cheeks but they don't hurt anymore.

If I do more talking or eating than usual I may get a sore spot or two but I use the Zilactin on it and it's gone before I know it!
