On My way!!

#1 Post by anngie27 »

I finally got clearance from my perio. to get my braces put on! I just made the appt and will be braced on 2/23 followed by 4 premolar extractions on the 25th (already had all four wisdom teeth removed last september).
I can't believe I'm doing this! I had to go through the wisdom teeth removal first and then the 2 appointments for the deep cleanings and then wait 8 weeks before my perio saw me to see if things improved. Not only did he clear me, he also says no bone graft for me either. My impacted wisdom tooth had been damaging the tooth next to it and he was originally concerned that I'd need a bone graft. Thank goodness things improved with that.
I'm really nervous about getting braces, but definitely need them due to alot of crowding on the my bottom teeth and other issues.
I know this is for the best, but for some reason, I keep thinking that my teeth won't be able to take the movement or tightening appointments and i'll lose a tooth (or teeth).
Hope I can do this!

Hey anngie!

Congrats on deciding to go for it! I'm still waiting to get mine on too. I also need 4 premolars out due to overcrowding on my bottom. I've had my first out so far, and will have the rest out next week. We sound quite similar! I would love to see some progress pics as things come along. (I have some before extractions, so far, in my story).

I've been really nervous as well, but mainly about the extractions. I hate that I need to have perfectly healthy teeth out, but I know it will be worth it.

Hang in there! We can get through it :D We'll be very glad at the end of it :)
My Story — Braced on 2 March 2012. 4 premolar extractions. Ceramic/clear uppers, metal lowers. Duration of 2 years.
Currently: Third adjustment 19 June (all teeth bracketed!)

Thanks domino! I know what you mean about having to have to extract 4 perfectly healthy teeth too. I really don't want to see them go, but the ortho says he wouldn't treat me if I didn't get them extracted. I officially say goodbye to all 4 premolars on the 25 of FEbruary so I'll just have to make peace with it by them.
Your front bottom teeth look so much like mine. Hopefully at some point I can get pics posted.
Good luck to you!!

Two more days until I get braces! I can tell you, I am really anxious right now and totally dreading it. My stomach has been knots and I didn't enjoy the weekend at all. I am so afraid of getting the archwire put in for the first time. I am so sensitive about my front teeth, I have visions and thoughts through out my life about them falling out--so you can imagine having the archwire put in or going through new wires and tightenings is scaring the daylights out of me.
I should be an utter wreck by Thursday morning. My appt. is for 2:00. I know i won't chicken out on the appointment, but I am scared I will make myself sick before then.

good luck on thursday :D
i know it can be nerve racking thinking about it. i was the same before my appointment. infact i almost called on the day of the appointment and cancel because i was feeling sick just thinking about it. the strange thing though is as soon as i went to the ortho office and had the braces fitted, it was like a heavy load had been lifted off my shoulder.

hang in there, by thursday night you will be wondering why you were so worried about it in the first place

You sound like me...

I was really afraid of the arch wire so my ortho had to do some groundwork before he could get it on my teeth. We took impression one day, and took pictures another day, really giving me many visits so I could start to trust him. Before getting the arch wire I went in a week before to get some brackets on so I could get used to the feeling of having brackets in my mouth.

I had already had 7 visits when the day came, and my ortho, kind as he is, said that we had no rush, if I could not get the arch wire that day he would give me another appointment.

But I did it and the first few days were not as bad as I thought it would be. The soreness lasted about a week but the pain was only when I ate. Since I had the brackets a week before the arch wire my mouth was already used to having this strange thing in my mouth so the braces itself did not feel weird at all (you can read it on my blog “can I do it?” if you want).
If you’re afraid of the pain or your teeth falling out (they won't  ) you can ask your ortho to put in a thinner wire. I started on .013, but some starts on .014 and .016. Be honest with your ortho about your fear, I’m sure he will do what he can to make you feel as comfortable as possible.

I still don’t like the arch wires and don’t look forward to getting a heavier one… Most people want a heavier wire and are glad when they get one, but I don’t like it   .

You’ll be fine   . Gooooood luck!!

And don't feel bad about your fear. You are braver than me, I needed 7 visits and you can do it on one!

Thanks Ebonyq. My phobia started when i was a child--my parents didn't have insurance so they took us very rarely to the dentist and when they did, it was by someone who didn't care that a child was sitting in the chair. On !!top of it, i have memories of my mom holding me down so she or my grandmother could pull out the last 2 of my stubborn baby teeth. not fun!t
when I became an adult, i stopped going altogether figuring if i didn't go, then nothing was wrong. totally not the right thing to do!
i have read some of your posts, and you do sound a lot like me too.
i will be honest with my ortho and explain how i am feeling before he starts on thursday and maybe that will help. i don't trust people easily and often second guess their motives and intentions so he's going to have to work hard to win me over.
it's funny, i've gone through alot of painful things in my life, but anything to do with my mouth and teeth is the absolute worst for me.
hope things go well with your treatment. i'm looking at 2 1/2 years of braces. :FeelSick:

It is getting very close now ! I do not have any extractions as I am missing several molars (i guess thats what they are called-the teeth in back). The plan is for clarity ceramics on top and metal on the bottom. I will need a couple of implants after the braces are off .
