My story...

#1 Post by deeley »

Hello all. Well at age of 37, yesterday I had brace put n my top teeth. I have always hated my smile, had fear of dentists and extraction as a child. But always regretted not getting teeth done.

In particular my smile bothers me as I have one tooth that always sticks out, and looks horrid, I can see it on all my pictures and it gets me down. Particularly family snaps with my two gorgeous kids, when all I see is mummy's horrid smile. And my wedding snaps. And my graduation. As a teacher I get a lot of kids asking me why my one tooth sticks out like that...hard to tell them I was scared of a dentist, especially when they may well go n to have braces soon.

Enter a wonderful young nine year old pupil called G for anonymity, who gets double braces and just takes the whole thing in her stride, inspires me, and makes me cry that night at her straightforward no fuss attitude...I'm in awe of her.

So, approaching my fortieth, I have devised a list of forty things to do before I'm forty...and even though I have put fun and serious things on it, when it comes down to it the one thing I want more than anything is straight teeth. It would be life changing. So I decided to go for it.

If my kids need braces, i dont want to feel like a hypocrite if i havent done it too.

Enter new dentist who is fantastic. Kind, gentle, encouraging. Enter me, asking for treatment expecting a two year mission. No he says, we can do that in eight months, it's no way as tricky as you think.

Oh. My. God.

So yesterday was brace day, and hopefully 8 months time is the day before my 38th birthday!

And I have a lovely bunch of flowers ready to give my inspiring friend G when I see her at school tomorrow bless her heart.

Welcome DEELEY!!!!

Congrats on starting your journey to a new smile!! I think starting is the hardest part and you are soooo lucky your journey will be short, you will be amazed how fast the time will fly and have fast your tooth will move.

What a touching story. You made me cry a little bit. Isn't it amazing how one wonky tooth can create so much hurt. Our smile is such a big part of who we are.

CONGRATS again and welcome, I can't wait to follow your journey, I will race you to the end.

I enjoyed your story. Congrats on making a great decision. I waited until I was 45 to do something about my wonky tooth and thought it would be a short adventure for me too. I went with Invisalign and ended up with an 18 month term. I hope to be done in June. Best of luck to you.

Hi Deeley!!! Welcome and congrats on starting your journey with braces!!!!

I am a secondary education teaching student now, and I have to say what kids would say about my teeth also crossed my mind. I know how mean jr high and high school kids can be and I just didn't want to have to deal with that. Not to mention at least 3 of my 5 kids are going to have to have braces so there was no reason for me not to be a good role mode. :)

Can't wait to see how everything progresses!

Hey Deeley

Hang in there. Take something for the pain and maybe salt water to help any irritation. Drink lots of water and use a good lip balm. If you get cold sores, have you ever tried the vitamin called llysine, its really good to boost your immune system.

The first couple weeks are the hardest, but remember you are more than your smile and after you start seeing your tooth move, you will know why you are going through all this discomfort, believe me it will be worth it.

If you need to have a good cry, then have a good cry but stay strong and know it will get better and easier each day. You did this for a reason because of all the times your teeth made you uncomfortable, so a little more discomfort will be worth the many happy smiles to come.

Take care

Elle

Congratulations, deeley! :jump:

I had my top teeth braced yesterday, and it feels like (and is!) a huge life event. I have wanted and needed braces for many years, but it took that many years to build up the courage to get them. I hope your journey goes as smoothly as possible. It's so exciting that it's only going to take eight months!!

busy few months, but realised today I've had this brace a little while now - it's part of me, and though I still notice it, it's getting easier.

Going through a cycle of adjustment - pain and ache, moving teeth, pain eases, spiked from the wire, mouth ulcer, headache earache, pain goes and adjustment time again!

I'm currently in ulcer headache earache zone. mmm.

Going to try and post a few pictures if I can work out how

Wow what a change!!! I'm sure you have had some soreness your teeth have moved so much in such a short time!!! They look great already!! Are you going to have your lowers braced as well?? Its amazing how quickly things change isn't it.

I wish that I was able to get done in 8 months. I was originally looking at 18-20 months but now its looking like about 24 months since my lowers refuse to straighten out.

again your teeth are looking awesome!!!

Thank you! Yes, I've often felt them moving, loose...even felt the small one snap into place one day, clicked it back out by accident and hastily back in again. Hubby nearly shrieked! Hehehe
Adjustment day tomorrow...
