Newbie, nervous, getting braces in a WEEK!

#1 Post by Tin Tooth »

Hello everyone!
I am so happy I found this forum. I decided at age 26 that it was time to get braces. Mostly because I will be getting married next June and I want my teeth to be at least 50% straighter for my wedding.

Questions for anyone who reads this... Any advice for prepping myself for braces? I am so nervous. Was everyone self conscious of their smile afterwards? Did your teeth hurt after they were put on?

Hi Tin Tooth and welcome, congrats on starting your braces journey

I got my braces at 24 but am now nearly 27. I personally think it's better to have braces as an adult as I think adults can handle it better than teens and are less likely not to wear their elastics and retainers etc. I think we're more keen to get things going and do as we are told  which stops us increasing our treatment time

You wont feel any discomfort during getting the braces fitted. You may want to take some pain medication prior to your appointment because some people experience some discomfort/soreness in their teeth after the brace is fitted... but everyone is different.

No one really noticed my brace, most people don't even realise I have one! I was a bit concious at first but soon got used to them. Now they're like a part of me... as my teeth have straightened I feel much more confident with my smile, even still in braces.

I got my braces in Nov 2010 and by May 2011 my teeth were totally straight so I would say you'll see a huge improvement by your wedding in June
Braces: Metal fixed upper and lower
Estimated treatment time: 18-24 months
Braces Removed: August 2013 (after 33 months in braces)
Retainers: Upper & lower essix and lower bonded

Hey! Great to hear youre starting with your braces. I think its normal to be nervous as we just sit around and wait for the final day. I am getting my braces on wednesday aswell, its just so frustrating just waiting for that to happen! Good luck with that! I am sure you will be fine and we will get used to the braces in a month atleast. We have to go through that but i am sure it will be worth it!!

Thanks BraceFace and Maria89!

@braceface-I never really thought about it like that. But I definitely agree! I am so excited to get braces now at my age but as a teen, I never even considered it. I was never comfortable in my skin at 14 and I couldn't imagine wearing braces at that age. Although I wish now my parents forced me! I am very excited to hear your teeth straightened in 7 months!! Did you have lots of crowding? I have bad crowding on my bottom teeth and an overbite. I am so excited to finally have perfect teeth at the end of my journey! :D

@maria- I just keep getting more nervous as everyday gets closer to my braces day but more and more excited! You will have to let me know how it goes when you get your braces. So happy to have found this forum and be able to talk with others going through the same thing. And it will totally be worth it!
