new decision, 30 years old

#1 Post by buffon85 »

hi! i am almost new to this forum! i am 29 years old (4 months to 30) and I have decided to have braces! I took this decision a while ago but now i have also the money to do it.
this week i have an appointment with an ortho and i can't wait. i have to say that i am afraid that he will ask me to have teeth extractions, my dentist also believes that are needed.
i am happy to find you! :D

i hope to stay here, i want to read stories, i think they can keep someone motivated!

Welcome to the club! I got my braces 2 months before my 40th birthday after building up my courage by reading a ton of stories on archwired! I love seeing people's progress and it is great to get advice from other adult Brace faces!
Good luck with your ortho journey!!!
Braces installed on March 25, 2014: Damon clears on top and metal on bottom.
I had braces for 25 months!

I was fearing extractions as well and had my 2 premolars on the top row extracted last Friday - honestly? It was a breeze and I was pretty much back on normal foods by dinner time

The process itself took about 15 minutes (less the 15 or so it took for the local anesthetic to work) with absolutely no pain

My orthodontist was also clever to get my braces on first a month beforehand, my teeth moved into position and even I could see why I needed the extractions, my canines would have had no space to come down otherwise

Every situation is different though and you really gotta trust your ortho that he/she knows what they're doing but I have no regrets :GapToothed: :GapToothed: :GapToothed:

It's a personal choice and will differ person to person of course but for me it was actually easier to decide after a few different consultations mostly because whilst there were some differences in their approaches all of them recommended the extractions of the 2 premolars on my top row, after accepting that it was just a question of figuring out which treatment plan made the most sense in terms of $$, aesthetics etc.

yes, you are right. i visited one more ortho and he told me the same things with minor differences. now I want to visit one more that I know that tries to avoid extractions if they are not necessary. if he tells me that they are not necessary i ll ask him to exlain it, if he tells me that they are necessary ill put all the options down and i will decide.
the ortho I visited yesterday told me that my teeth - first premolars and back- are for photo! but incisors and canines noooot so much :-* that is why we need to extract the first premolars to bring the teeth back!

so I visited a second ortho, I liked him more, the price is a little higher, not something I can't afford.
His approach is a little different. he first wants to put the top braces, then have the top teeth extracted, then the bottom braces and then the bottom extracted. the second doctor wants two extracted, another two extracted and then top and bottom braces. in the second case I will be a little embarrassed to miss 4 teeth without the braces on. I wonder what is the difference between the 2 approaches.
now I will visit a third ortho a friend of mine recommended. she had braces in my age, 2 doctors had told her she needed extractions and this doctor gave her a perfect smile without any extractions. so I want to give it a try. He has a lot of work, I have to wait for the appointment and that bothers me but I need to hear a third opinion.

At the end of the day you gotta go with an ortho you can trust so I'd say wait till you get this 3rd opinion, let me know how you go!

ps: I had my premolars extracted last week and so far unless I actually show it to them no one has noticed ;)

third ortho today!
its official, 4 teeth need to be extracted
he had a different plan, first braces, after 2 months 2 extractions and after 2 more months two more extractions. 2500 euro, extractions included and retainers included.
this weekend I have to take the decision.
18-24 months!

Interesting, I had my braces on for about a month and a bit before my top 2x premolars were removed as well, for me it was perfect as by then my teeth had moved to a stage where even I could see why I needed the extractions...

My sentence is 24 months

Think hard about which one you will go for this weekend! preferably over popcorn, caramel, burgers and all the foods on the braces NO NO list, it may be a while till you consume them again
