celiviel's excellent braces adventure

#1 Post by celiviel »

Hi all,

I've been lurking here for a few months and thought I should finally post. You guys seem like such a friendly and supportive bunch, and I think my friends and family just aren't in the talking-about-braces groove.

I'd declined treatment as a teenager since I didn't really have any bite issues, but had started to regret that decision in recent years. My ortho said that considering I didn't have anything done as a teenager, my bite was pretty darn good. But I have a small mouth (fortunately with small teeth to match) and there was some crowding. In particular, my upper and lower incisors were all wonky, especially the upper, and the contacts between my teeth were so tight as to make flossing difficult. After three different dentists in a row recommended braces, I decided to go for it.

I got my top brackets and upper spacers on December 22. I don't have a true Before picture, but this is what my teeth looked like on January 5, which also happened to be my 25th birthday.

Image

By that point there had already been noticeable movement in my front two teeth, which had been facing each other at about a 30-degree angle when I started. Upper molar bands went on January 25 (yes, I was wearing spacers for a month ).

Image

And finally, lower brackets, lower spacers, and a new archwire on top on February 22.

Image

My next adjustment is March 22 (spacers for a month again ), when I'll be getting my lower molar bands.

My ortho told me 24 months seemed like a reasonable treatment length, though it could be as little as 18, depending on how things go. At some point I may need to have my wisdom teeth out to free up more space. I'm not at all attached to my wisdom teeth, so I may see if she'll just yank them if it'll speed up treatment.

But I'm pretty happy with my decision so far!

Welcome to the board celiviel,

Everyone here is incredibly supportive and helpful. Your teeth are looking great. Some great movement...especially with your front tooth. :)

Looking forward to reading your journal.

Welcome to the board. Wow your teeth don't look like they have far to go. I hope your treatment goes well. I am sure it won't take to long for your teeth to straighten out. I know it's hard and it hurts sometimes but it is worth it.

Thanks!

I wish I had taken more pictures when I first began treatment--from all sides and also getting pics of the arch--so I could really see how much difference it's made. I'm also kind of antsy because my teeth look straight enough to satisfy my vanity, but I know I've got a long ways to go, especially on the bottom teeth. Right now there isn't enough space for me to get the skinny waxed floss in between some of them, even though they look pretty straight from the front.

Welcome to the board!

Yes, you are right, our four front teeth are/were very similar, angular wise.

Your teeth look great!

It's nice to have this site because I can talk with and encourage other people. It seems like no one in my 'real life' wants to talk about my braces, maybe because they feel I'd be embarrassed. Not a bad intention, but it is nice to be able to come here with questions and comments and hear other people's stories. This site is a great thing!

So I went for my third adjustment today and it was kind of disappointing.

They changed the ligs (yay, no more dingy ligs) and gave me a left lower molar band.

But they couldn't get the right lower band on, so they stuck me back in spacers. For another month. :(

And that was it.

On a more positive note, all my top front teeth seem pretty aligned now, although they need leveling. But there's no more overlapping! Yay!

It feels like my lower teeth have barely moved since getting bracketed. Bah.

It's good to know what your top teeth are aligned :) I can't wait for mine to be!!

It really sucks to only have ligs changed doesn't it? Feels like we're not going forward with the treatment...that's how I feel. But I guess that at the end, I will be happy thinking back on those adjustments where all was done is a lig change...because I imagine that as more stuff are put in your mouth, more pain is involved...lol

Pictures!

I feel less disgruntled now that I can compare these with the picture from last month. I wish I'd taken a before picture of my lower arch because I think it looks less collapsed on the left than it was before, but I have no way of confirming right now.

I hope the ortho will let me have the molds of my teeth after I'm done. That would be kind of fun.

So this month has been (somewhat) exciting.

The first weekend in April I discovered I'd lost a lig. I called the office and they said to come in for an appointment, so I did. While I was there, they popped out the spacers and banded my last molar and connected the wire.

The ortho gave me a referral to go see an oral surgeon about having my wisdom teeth out and said that next time I'll probably be getting new wires on the top and bottom. Woo!

The progress is more subtle now, but hopefully you can see what I see. :)

Thanks!

I forgot to mention that my ortho said she'd be shaving my lowers to make enough space. I don't remember when she said she'd do that though; I'm guessing some time after my lower arch straightens itself out on the left side.
