Is it common to start with the esssix and move onto a hawley retainer after a period of time?
Is there a difference in the effectiveness between the two?
Hawley or Essix?

I haven't heard of people moving from one to the other.
What I have heard is that the Hawley can be used to make slight further adjustments.
But the Essix is invisible, and you can also use it to apply fluoride gels and tooth mousse to your teeth. I have also heard of people using it as a bleaching tray, but my ortho said the contact wouldn't be quite right (it's rigid, so doesn't quite "cling" to the surfact of every tooth like the rubbery custom-made bleaching ones do.
