Getting ready for the big day......

#1 Post by charlotte T »

Hi there everyone,

I'm new to this site but I have really found all the infomation from other people REALLY helpful and informative. I feel better knowing there are others out there with the same concerns as me!

I'm being braced on Tuesday and am a little nervous about it but I'm so pleased that I'm nearly on the road to straighter teeth and being able to *smile* properly. (I've learnt many tricks on how to hide my awful teeth)

Wish I'd done all of this when I was younger. (I'm 23)

Hey,
Good luck for tuesday! Ive been braced for a month or so now and i have no regrets, only to have had them put on earlier. People dont react that differently to them like you may imagine, some dont give you the reaction you think your braces deserve and you want them to show more interest haha.Once again, Good luck!

Wish you all the best!

Hey charlotte! I got my braces on almost a month ago now, and I'm also 23 (24 on the 23rd of this month). Like newmetal, my only regret is not having them put on earlier!

And also like newmetal I find that people don't react that differently. My boyfriend thinks their cute, and everyone else just asks a few questions and then move on... eg: 'do they hurt', 'can you take them out' (??) and I even got asked 'why did you get braces? i thought your teeth were fine!?' etc (you can check out my pics/thread in this forum somewhere hehe). Like you I also learnt many tricks to hide my teeth and I guess no one noticed!!

Congratulations on getting them and good luck with everything :)

Hi!
Congrats on beginning your braces journey! I have been braced for about 5 months now and I have seen lots of progress. Expect your teeth to be sore for the first few days though as they are getting used to your braces. Hope everything goes well Tuesday! Keep us informed.

Good luck.
Most people on the list will tell you that the first few days with the spacers are the worst. The important thing is this is a procedure (most people on this forum refer to it as a journey) that hopefully will make a positive improvement for the rest of your life.

As for wisdom (thanks to KK), this is what she was told from her ortho on the day she got her braces:

The best gift I got on that day ... was many wonderful words of advice ...

Don't let braces change your daily life ...
Let this be a positive experience ...
Braces don't stop you from doing things, you do that ...
Attitude is everything ...
"Call me tomorrow and let me know how wonderful the first 24 hours have been."

Finally take pictures before the braces, and pictures in the first two days with braces. When you get disgusted with the process, look at the progress shown in those pictures. Even after a couple of weeks, they’ll give you great encouragement.

Welcome to the board.

Mike
I wore braces (this time) for 1294 days or 3 years, 6 months and 17 days.
But who's counting?

Thanks for praying for me and thinking happy thoughts.

Thanks everyone for your support! I'll post some pics when I figure out how to :) My friends and family have all been v. supportive of me getting this done even though some have visibly paled when they found out how much I'm paying for this treatment! I try not to think about it too much

Im enjoying being able to eat hard food for the last few days, I had 4 extractions a couple of weeks ago and I've pretty much got used to the gaps. I want them to close real quick though!!

Good luck Natalie!

Hello and welcome, Charlotte!

I am 22 and have been braced for nearly four months. It's funny, now that they are on I don't wish I'd had it done years ago- orthodontics has gone forward in leaps and bounds over even the last decade, and I'm happy to be in the brackets I'm in with the ortho I'm with!

Let us know how it goes, and best of luck for the first few weeks! Spoil yourself, and take care.

Thanks everyone! Everything went smoothly....was over in about 40 mins and the staff were great, went through eveything with me and gave me a little pack with lots of different kinds of wax (which by the way, I'm loving at the mo, lol) toothbrushes, mouthwashes, mirrors (2 of these?!) etc..
Its been a little over 24 hours and there is pressure against my teeth but no pain at all. If I'm honest, I quite like the feeling of the pressure because it shows my journey has started :D
My canines protrude quite a lot, one isn't even attached to the arch wire because its too high, and the brackets on these are a bit annoying because they rub on my lip but its nothing wax doesn't sort out.

Natalie, you'll be fine. I was so scared before I went in because I thought it would hurt but it really doesn't. Just use lots of lip balm because the mouth stretcher thing is tight. When you feel all the metal in your mouth for the first time it's a bit strange and you think everyones looking, but I went to see friends yesterday and one didn't even notice I'd had them put on! (I've got ceramic at the top)

Let me know how you get on won't you? :-*
