newly naked... but what was the first thing you ate???

If you have finished with your orthodontic treatment and are wearing retainers (or will be soon), this is a special place to connect with others in your (enviable) situation. Ask a question or make a comment about life post-braces.

newly naked... but what was the first thing you ate???

#1 Post by astereje »

after 1 1/2 years i got my braces off on monday :) , and now it is wednesday and i still haven't eaten anything that i wasn't supposed to eat when i had my braces on! the first thing i ate was this chicken wrap with avocado and vegetables with french fries and lemonade! Nothing i couldn't have eaten before! hmm maybe i'm not trying hard enough. or maybe i am so used to not eating forbidden foods that i don't remember what is forbidden anymore!

what did you eat?

I went and had a pecan pastry. No longer have to pick the bits of nuts out of the braces. Next will be pasta, since I got tired of having strands of spaghetti snaked along above the below the braces.
I have also gone back to eating salad in public. (ahem)
I had an apple the week after I got the tops off. I will have to wait until the bottoms, newly-off, settle down before repeating that one.
Popcorn is up tonight! And maybe something sticky!
Oh yeah, I had gotten sort of casual about picking food out and would forget I was with somebody...so my friends will be real relieved!

First, Trident White gum...my ortho had a big jar of the stuff so I grabbed a handful. When I got home, I made POPCORN!!! A few weeks later I had corn on the cob and bar-b-q ribs.

Since then (June), I really haven't had much that I didn't with the braces on. I still cute things into bite sized pieces (force of habit?)

I DO love my popcorn tho!!!

Linda, I love your kitty pic! Is that your cat driving? LOL

I still have mine on, but I have a list of things i'm planning on eating shortly after they come off (January 4th!).

Corn on the cob, these HUGE caramel apples covered in candy that we have at the mall, Oreos, biting into things...just random things I guess. I'll just be excited to eat ANYTHING and not have it get stuck!

I'm also having a party the day after I get mine off! I'm going out to eat with a large group of friends and I asked everyone to bring their favorite gooey/sticky food or candy to share if they wanted to. :)

Sorry, I just got super excited thinking about eating like a human again! Haha.

Not so much what I ate...but where...

For me, the first thing I did after debanding was go to lunch and order a salad. Yep, eating in public, especially a salad, was pure heaven after having my braces removed.

I ate salads frequently when I had my braces, but only at home! :-)

It was such a huge relief not to have to run to the restroom and check my braces for food after eating a salad at a restaraunt!

Overall, for me, the hardest part of braces was not the food restrictions, but being self-conscious eating in public.

I just got mine on a few months ago and I'm already planning on getting a carmel apple. Disneyland has the BEST carmel apples and being as I live about 15 mins away I go there all the time. I was there this weekend and I wanted one so bad. I was practically drooling in the store. My friend had to drag me away :( Another Disneyland favorite that I am really missing is frozen bananas....mmmmmm. Okay, I need to stop now

P.S. I thought I was one of the few that had trouble with salad. It takes me forever to get the bits out of there and I always seem to eat a salad when I can't brush my teeth right away :x

I completely know what you mean about the caramel apples! I was in Disneyworld about 2 weeks before I got my braces off and when my brother bit into a caramel apple his tooth came out! I'm so glad I decided not to have one! Well, I got my braces off almost a week ago, and the first thing I ate was like 10 pieces of gum! Then I flossed my mouth because it was so easy to floss! After that I just had a trip to the grocery store and bought lots of sticky things!

well i went out to lunch with the receptionist and her daughter(my friend) who was also an ortho assistant. i got a BIG sandwich and dug my teeth right into it. oh and a few chips. It felt soooo good not having to break my sandwich us and later picking all of the bread out of my braces. Ill NEVER forget that day....i was a happy person!

when i get my braces off, well if i get my braces off in a month i hope to have a big caramel apple. to be honest, that is all i want. i lost my appetite permanently for hard stuff like starbursts... i would also like to be able to eat corn ON the cob, but i dont do that often so it hasnt really gotten to me while in braces. i would just like to be able to bite into stuff without having to worry (ya i bit into a lot of stuff that i wasnt supposed to and knocked a couple off, but heck... i got them put back on for free)

for some odd reason HARD anything will never appeal to me anymore... except apples :)

The current thing that I miss the most eating would be apples without having to cut the food would be apples!

the first thing I ate was a veggie burger, not a "forbidden" food but it was still nice to have the food just slide off my teeth and not get stuck there like with braces.

When I got home....I ate an entire bag of baby carrots in one day.

then I moved on to bagel crisps, pineapple (no more strings caught on the wire!), vanilla caramel chocolates from purdy's, starbusrts....and now I'm off to enjoy some extra-sticky gum i saved from halloween.

I forgot about caramel apples. *drools thinking about them*...I'm going to have to find one of those. lol
