Numbness of the gums.

Hi, Just wondering if anyone can tell me wether the numbness in my top and bottom gums is normal or not? I am 2 months post op from a double bi-max osteotomy. Still got a lot of swelling in my cheeks, but my numbness appears to be slowly dissapearing from everywhere except from my gums. Brushing my teeth is really wierd!!! Am also suffering badly with sensitive teeth now, which was never a problem pre-surgery. Any help or reassurance about my numb gums would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I had SARPE in July, and then double jaw last week. I barely was getting full feeling back in my upper gums 6 months down the road. It takes six months to a year to get back feeling. There are some places that may never have full sensation again. It won't be numb...but not quite like it was prior to surgery.

Yes Jennicole is correct it takes awhile to get full feeling back. It took about 8-9 months for me after SARPE to get the feeling back in my gums. It came back in stages with the right side starting first for me, but my teeth were also very tender. Especially the ones in front. That only went away about 1 month ago which was 9 months post op.

So....with that being said, be prepared for a minimum of 6 months til 1 year for full feeling, or most of it. It literally takes 3 months for the bones to heal, then you have the blood supply that comes next, followed by the nerve healing and regeneration last. So...it is a long process. With that being said, I have gotten full feeling back in my upper palate. NO numb spots anymore. it is totally weird to brush teeth that feel like wood, and I feel your pain as I hated that part! But......it does take awhile. The gums for me were the last to heal, especially the area behind my front incisors. The fact that most of the feeling is coming back everywhere else is a very good sign, so just try and be patient!

Thanks for the reply girls, really appreciate all advice and other peoples experiences. Did you feel as though you had an upper lip full of cottonwool by any chance?? The feeling in my upper gum is really, really, strange, whilst I appreciate that any feeling must mean it isn't exactly numb, I just can't help being a bit concerned about the funny feeling in my upper gums and lip.
