Hey everyone,
So I had upper and lower jaw surgery done on Wednesday. It apparently went really well, but I'll be completely honest in saying that the following days were absolutely hell. I had an extreme amount of difficulty breathing, swallowing, etc. It was probably the most horrific experience of my entire life, but I've made it through this far. It feels so surreal being on the other side of this, knowing that the worse is over. I'm have an overwhelming amount of love and support from my friends and family, and I seriously don't think I would have survived without them. I'm finally starting to get a handle on using the syringe, and I'm not enjoying all the meds I have to take, but I know the importance of taking them. I'm already sick of Ensure and Boost, so have been drinking lots of Yop (that yogurt type drink) and fruit juices. My swelling is already starting to go down, and everyone says I look good. I'm also starting to feel the pressure of my jaws being held together by elastics, and it's a really weird, but good, feeling. The only thing I'm really struggling with (besides getting the kids' ibuprofen down without gagging, believe it or not) is that I am finding it impossible to sleep. The recliner seemed like such a good idea when we first thought of it, but it's uncomfortable. I guess it's just something to get used to. They told me that I'm young and healthy, so I'll bounce back quickly, and I can already feel myself bouncing back. For the most part, I feel absolutely awesome. I don't think I'm going to be out of school for a month like they told me...heck, if I continue to make leaps and bounds like I have been, I could go back next week!! I can't wait to feel back to normal, and with a new smile to boot. It was my 18th birthday yesterday (that's the legal age in Alberta), and I can't wait to actually go out and celebrate. Does anyone have any suggestions for eating/sleeping?

Hi Jadeli,
Congratulations on making it to the other side and Happy 18th Birthday I wish you all the best in your recovery. Before you know it you will be out there partying it up!!
I drank a lot of milkshakes and smoothies in the days after my surgery. Sometimes I would blend pasta or soup but I didn't like it as much, guess everyone's taste varies. Mostly mixed ice cream or vanilla yogurt with milk or ensure/boost/carnation packets, banannas or strawberries, orange juice or pineapple juice. Nothing too exciting, but it just seemed to be the only thing I wanted to eat. The other thing that is good is completely liquefying mashed potatoes in the blender and just pouring it from a cup into your mouth. This filled me up a little longer.
As for sleeping, I slept in my bed on my back propped up with a huge number of pillows. I think people who used the recliner had some trouble getting used to it. Maybe you could try your bed? I didn't sleep through the night either for the first week or so, was up quite a lot.
Hang in there!

Jadeli-I found that Carnation powder didn't have the after taste that Ensure/Boost did. I also invested in protein powders that I could blend in with other things like juice, milk, soya milk etc. Soups etc can be pureed to death-as thin as you like. I wanted flavour so badly that a big treat would be someone buying me soup and I would puree it down with broth or milk just to have flavour. Sleeping-well as I said in another post it is about pillows and more pillows. Did your OS give you a decongestant for the stuffiness? Mine did for my upper/lower. If he/she didn't-ask when you visit again about using an over the counter kind-it really does help in the beginning with that feeling-it is bad enough being banded and all of the blood in the nose doesn't help-ask it can't hurt. I also iced my sinuses-the front of my face-for short periods of times and that helped as well. I went between ice and moist heat-be careful though as you don't usually have feeling back so short after surgery(you might by now) so you don't want to give yourself frostbite

I'm three weeks ahead of you
Hey Jadeli, congrats on the surgery! Yeah, the first two weeks are no fun at all. I had breathing difficulties, too. You can find related posts and remedies on my blog at http://bracemyself.blogspot.com/search?q=breathing.
Take care!
