Front teeth move backward or back teeth move forward?

#1 Post by Yayme! »

Hello Everyone,

I was wondering about this. When they close extraction gaps (one upper bicuspid on both sides) with a power chain, what is really happening? Is it the front teeth that move backward, or the back teeth that move forward? Or a bit of both?

Thanks!

It will depend on your bite and why you had extractions done in the first place.

Are your top front teeth crowded, or too far forward of the bottom teeth? If so, then your ortho probably intends moving your top front teeth backwards into the extraction gaps.

Having said that, it's possible that your back teeth may move forward as well if they are not anchored in position by some means. Anchorage can be gained by use of a Nance/TPA, headgear, mini-implants etc.

I had 4 premolars extracted...

In my lower jaw, my front teeth are moving backward and my back teeth are moving forward. They'll meet somewhere in the middle.

In my upper jaw, my back teeth are going absolutely nowhere, and my front teeth are going way back. My back teeth are being held solidly in their position by a Nance, as well as headgear 8-10 hours a day.
