Hi, I am new and in need of friends.

#1 Post by munchkin »

Hi!
:D
My name is Leann and I have just been sentenced to a year in ceramics. This was PURELY my choice. I was told that I only needed to get them if I was cosmetically unhappy. I thought about it for almost a year and then I decided to choose an differnent Ortho than the one I had originally planned on using. I am so happy I switched. The first Ortho was going to charge $3000 for ALL my teeth for about 14 months. Thats when I decided to think about it because I am paying for them MYSELF and thats a lot of money for someone of 24 and I support myself.

Well, this past Christmas my mom called me and asked if I still wanted braces. I, of course, told her YES and she said that she mentioned to her boss that I wanted them and he said that his best friend since childhood was an Ortho. So, she set up an appointment with him for my consultation.
:D 8)
At the consultation, I told him about how I really didnt like that other guy and why. I told him what I wanted fix and then he came up with a few possible solutions. I also let him know that I was on a "limited budget" and that I really liked the ceramics because of my profession. Well, he presented to me the few solutions and I asked him what he would do if I was his own daughter. He told me that he would do what he called a "limited service" treatment because my molars are PERFECT. So, basically, I have 8 on the top and 8 on the bottom and I got the CERAMICS!!! Since my mom worked for his best friend he said he would also cut me a deal. When they did the pricing the original cost of the "limited treatment" was $4000, but with some miracle work (and a prayer) he is only charging me $2200. It took a couple of months for the down payment because that was my Christmas present from my dad. But after that, it was showtime and I made my appointment for 02/24/05.
8)
So, now it is 02/26/05 and I am IN PAIN!!! I DO feel like someone has hit me with a bat. The brackets dont hurt as much as the MOVEMENT. I have only used wax twice so far. As far as the movement, I have ALREADY noticed a signifigant change in my bite and position of my teeth. Is this "normal"? Not to mention that the week before I got these darn things in, I had a viral infection in my lungs. So, ever since before I got the braces, I have had a severe dry cough. I am literally MISERABLE! But, I know that this is just temporary and that I will feel better soon and these things will stop hurting.

Does anyone have any recommendations for soft food to eat? My jaw is even sore so it is hard to chew.
thanks,
leann

Congratulations Munchkin on getting the braces. As for soft foods:

Applesauce, canned fruit, mac & cheese, scrambled eggs, cottage cheese, protien drinks, etc.

Having your bite change already is normal - your teeth are already starting to shift. You should get relief in a few days. The discomfort will slowly deminish and you will be eating normally in a week or two.

If the pain is really bad, try taking a tylenol or ibuprophin.

Good luck on your journey. :D

SMOOTHIES!!!!

#3 Post by Nanski »

Take what you like and make smoothies. Fruit, protein powder, milk, ice cream. PAsta anything.

Have pudding, rice, mashed potatoes, cheesecake, stuffing and gravey. Any meats you can grind up. If you had mayo, make chicken salad. If you want a hot meal add gravey and make a chicken mush. Yogert, soups. Anything you can smash against the roof of you mouth should be okay. My favorite these days is spanish rice and sour cream. Bananas and other mushy fruits can be blended to make smoothies. Oatmeal and hot cereals. If you were sick last week you really need to eat well. Can't chew so drink what's good for you....

Do a search on the web for Soft Food recipes. Cancer patients have the same problems, there are recipes to help. Get some of that Ensure stuff to keep up your vits and proteins.

There is no need for anyone in braces not to eat. Babies and old people thrieve with no teeth...you just have to be creative.

Braces - "NOT" (-: - Doc addressed jaw issue w/out the need for braces at the moment!!! "Damn fine with me, I'd rather buy a new bay window for my house."

Thanks everyone for welcoming me. I feel like I belong here. When I say I hurt, people understand. If I tell my fiance that I am hurting he makes a face at me and calls me "Pottery Mouth" (in a loving way). He had Drop pin metal with molar bands for over 3 years, so he knows what I am going through but he is NOT sympathetic. Sometimes I just wanna be held.....

Anyhoo...Saturday morning was rough. I tried to lie down and sleep (I work nights, sleep during the days) and my jaws were hurting. I ended up using the last resort for my pain and took a Lortab. I know, I am weak, but they really HURT. Hopefully, they will get better. I think they hurt because I ate food for breakfast. Then, tonight I ate chicken SPAM SPAM SPAM SPAM SPAM because they are small and chewy. I was sassified!!! Well, I have to go back to work for now. Talk to everyone later!

Hang in there, it really does get better! And check in here for encouragement any time. It sounds like you are happy with your ortho and you have got a great price too. At two days or so you are probably at the most difficult point, so just lay low as much as possible for now and you'll get through it.

I'm more of a fan of multivitamins than of that Ensure stuff, which I find really chemical-tasting. Smoothies are always fun, and soups, and mac-and-cheese.

Take care of yourself! Good luck!

Earlier during the day on Sunday, I was starting to get a little sore on my upper rt where I have the prongs for the bands. All I did was take a little Alum to it and BOOM, it was gone! I did wear my wax just to prevent it from rubbing anymore and then tonight I am am wax free and fine. Well, I will talk to y'all later. :P :D

I am a week into these devices and I am feelng much better. I actually got to BITE into a waffle this morning. It did hurt so I am not planning on doing it much. I do have a litle crisis going on. On my upper right side the wire is poking me a little so I called my doc and made an appointment for Monday at 8:30am to get that fixed. I am surviving on wax until then. Well, I hope your braces get to feeling better. Keep in touch! :D

Well today marks to first week! yay!! I've made it...

I have however managed to loosen a rubber band or something, it hasn't popped completely, but it isn't all the way around the bracket... So I've gotta run to the ortho  yay!! lol They'll fix it, I'll probably have some pressure, and I'll be fine, I'll let ya know later on this afternoon... how I'm feeling lol. Other than that... Nothing really hurts anymore.. well except for the fact that I live with wax on the back brackets, with those stupid hooks at the ends, my mouth is all cut up... uggh!

Other than that.. all is well, hope everyone had a good weekend.!* :D

I am glad you are doing better. I had to run to the Ortho myself this morning because I had a wire poking me in my cheek. He had to pull on the wire some to get a good grip on it to cut it and itfelt like all my top teeth shifted to the left! That definitly hurt, so I am in pain again. he also gave me TONS of wax. YAY! Well, I am off to take a nap.

MahTeef, don't be too sure about no more pain until the first adjustment. Your teeth are constantly in a state of flux and they could spring into a new position at any time. I started on November 17 - went through a week of pain and then thought I was good to go. On about December 23rd, some of my front lower teeth decided to shift, and oh were they tender for a few days....

wish you well :D

I am feeling a little better and I have not used any wax or taken any Advil. I am trying to stay away from those the best I can and "rough it". So, far I am doing pretty good but I think I am going to need an Advil before too much longer. I understand what you mean when you say your teeth are in a constant state of flux. I feel mine moving all the time. Its weird. One minute everything will be ok and then 10 minutes later my jaw is on fire. Well, I hope everyone has a good day tomorrow, I am going to be sleeping because I am on my work week and I am only up at night. :D

I am back!

#15 Post by munchkin »

Hello everyone!
Sorry I have been SUPER busy for the past month or so. First and foremost I want to send a HUGE thanks to Lynn for sending me my dentakit. It goes everywhere with me. I LOVE IT!!!!!! You rock my socks, Lynn!

Next, an update...I had my 2nd adjustment yesterday, April 26th. On March 29 (my last appt.) the space that they are trying to "create" so they can turn the tooth was not wide enough, so they had to put a larger spring on the archwire. This most recent appt. (yesterday), I got the spring taken off and the last bracket added to the upper right canine. They had to put a 1-2 wire on it PLUS a ligature so the wire wouldnt "pop" off! It hurts! I was doing fine and eating pretty much anything and everyhing but now I am back to where I was when I first got them. Oh well! On my next appt. I get the oh-so-fun power chains to start really turning that bad boy.

Other news. My fiance joined the Marines, so I have been dealing with that. He leaves for boot camp on Sept. 12 so I will have to prepare myself. Otherwise, I have been doing ok. Well, I will talk to everyone layter!
