Hi there!
I'm getting braces on for the first time at age 58 on Wednesday of this week and I'm excited and terrified at the same time. My friends are coming over that evening with soup and Martinis and they will play my spam game while I moan on the couch! I will be posting before and after pictures so that everyone can be amazed and repulsed by my really homely overjet. I am so happy I found this forum and looking forward to hearing all the good advice and support from all you brace faces.

You'll really enjoy posting here- you get a lot of advice and encouragement from fellow bracies and it's a great feeling to know that you're not the only adult in the world to be getting orthodontic treatment.

Hey Moosie, Welcome to the after 50 club!!Hope you have a nice stay here .I 'm BRACED!
Thanks to all who welcomed me to the forum.
Well, I'm a member of the club, now. Got these things on last Wednesday morning and shortly after, headed for a long Labor Day weekend at Lake Okoboji. So glad I got the time off from work to figure out how to live day to day with these things in my mouth! My job required that I speak half way intelligently and I sounded like Sylvester the cat and I still do sometimes.
Getting them on was almost exactly like everyone described it here. The only difference is I never saw a blue light. Maybe it had something to do with keeping my eyes shut during most of the process. They made we wear these stupid looking sunglasses. Ever heard of that?
Now I look like a cross between Mick Jagger and Mr. Ed. lol
The back molars on the bottom are not attached to the wire and the brackets are bugging the hell out of me. I think I've gone thru 4 little packets of wax.
Here is a short synopsis of my bad teeth history.
I am the oldest of nine(count em) kids. Way back when I really could have used braces my parents weren't the least interested in trying to scrape up the money to get me into them. I have about 3 things going against me.
1) genetics - a slightly underslung jaw is a family trait on dear old dad's side.
2) I was a very active toddler and managed to jump out of my stroller and land on my face - thereby killing my top 2 front teeth and having to have them extracted at the age of 2
3) There never was nor there never will be a child that loved her thumb more than I did. I can remember being shamed into quiting at the ripe old age of seven.
I have three thing going for me.
1) despite the thumb I do not have an open bite. My teeth do not flare out either.
2) I have a driving desire to get this thing done
3) I finally have an Ortho who agreed to do this without jaw surgery.
Jaw surgery was the only option I was given for years and years. Being a coward this was NOT an option for me. I just want a nice arch, nice straight teeth!
So I will end up at the end with a slight overjet. Who Cares!!??? Nothing that anyone would ever notice if you weren't an Ortho or some kind of tooth maniac.
That's my story. I still have to get pictures up on the sight so you can see what I'm talking about. If I can get my husband, Mr. Moose, to stop playing the piano and help me out it might even be tonight. I'm looking forward to all of your stories and I'm grateful for you support.

Pictures - finally
I can't believe I finally figured out how to get pictures on this site. I am an idiot!
I'm going on 20 days in braces and so far no problem. No pain at all. A couple canker sores - big deal.
I never really looked at my teeth until now. The upper arch is narrow and the bottom is crowded and narrow. I have a strange curve to my bottom incisors. They were starting to crash into the roof of my mouth.
My two front teeth were starting to move outward even more and there were spaces between them and the second incisors.
I think I look for changes in my teeth every five minutes. I'm driving my Mister Moose nuts. Everytime he looks at me I'm looking at my teeth.
So far I've had to TELL people I have braces. Either they don't see them of they pretend they don't see them. Noone cares except me and of course my best friend, Mr Moose.
I will try to take better pictures and post them soon. In the mean time - don't look at my double chin. I have to learn how to crop better.

Congrats on joining the many thousands and thousands of adults who are braced! Are you feeling good so far, or what? It's such an exciting time. Make sure you keep close tabs on your progress with pictures, it's really encouraging to go back after a while and look at the difference from your 'before' photos.
Your teeth look fantastic!
