Day 2 - Post-Op

#1 Post by simplywired »

Hi All -

Thank you Meryaten for letting our friends on this forum know I was feeling pretty good.

I had my first appointment with my surgeon post-op which seemed a little soon to me having just got out of the hospital yesterday! Anyway, long story short, I'm doing well and he took the elastics out today. I haven't been taking pain meds since they make me nauseated so today I drove myself to this appointment. This was dumb but I felt like being on my own and away from my nurse hubby for a while. I'm a little tired but made it just fine.

Yesterday I looked like Don Corleon and today I look worse - more like Deputy Dog. But thank heavens I'm able to eat soups and even crackers. Think I've been lucky. One thing I was told is if you can while in the hospital, try to take a walk - it really helps to get your blood moving and the more you can tolerate doing sooner - helps ten-fold later in recovery. I took a walk around the hall a few hours post-op (with the steady hand of a nurse by my side) but later when I got up to use the bathroom the room whirled - so just take it one step at a time.

I don't have what can be described as "pain" per se but discomfort mainly from the swelling I think and a slight sore throat. All in all, darn lucky I'd say - hope the recovery continues to be this smooth. I'll keep you posted - and thanks so much for all your kind support. This forum is the best! :D

Good for you, simplywired! It's so nice to hear when someone's surgery goes so well  . You sound very independent, too.

Here's to you looking like yourself (only better) soon!

Lo

Today is day 3 post op. I'm not quite a up-beat as I was yesterday. I do think I was pushing it driving myself to my appointment yesterday. Today I'm feeling quite tired and a little down. I am quite numb -especially my chin and under my lip and VERY bruised. Everytime I look in the mirror I laugh - what a mess. But like they say - one day at a time.

John21 - I had surgery for an overbite on my lower jaw - BSSO with midline. My dentist had been after me for years to get braces and have this surgery done but at the time I said "no way". As time went by I had a consult with an orthodontist and he said the only way for me to get a correct bite was braces and surgery. I've never liked my profile either and "weak chin" but kept making excuses not to do anything about.

Then after a few years, I decided to go ahead and have everything done. Nobody was supportive of this - in fact they all said "are you crazy" and "oh, you don't need it" - etc. So it is a decision you have to make for yourself and only you know what you need and want - not friends, not family. It took me many years to do this and your determination at this age and with the advancements they've made in procedures and technology, is a good thing. Good luck.
