Debbra's story of Damon 3's at 50 something.

#1 Post by Debbra »

After years of wanting braces, I've got them as of noon today. Wonder how I'll feel about them later when the soreness sets in? Or maybe it won't. I will say my mouth feels full of foreign objects. Yikes...my upper lip seems to catch on the top braces. I sure hope that doesn't continue. I have an overjet and problematic TMJ issues. My ear aches, my jaw clicks and I get headaches. I am counting on this clearing most of that up. I am currently self employed, but I'm also a radio announcer and will soon be back on the air. I am very concerned that my speech will be affected. I don't go on for a few weeks, so I'm hoping my mouth and tongue have time to get used to this very new and strange experience.

I saw three "tweens" at Starbucks yesterday and was talking to them about their experience in braces. I mentioned that I was gong to be wearing them and said, "Isn't that weird? A woman my age in braces."
And one of the girls said no way, my dad had them too! It made me feel so much better. I appreciate finding this site and havig an opportunity to share my story. Please feel free to communicate with me and share your experiences.Image(alt+P)

As a 50 something myself and a college instructor I was concerned with lecturing for several hours with my braces. No big thing. At first my lips resented having to move all the way over my brackets but with a little conscious effort and some enunciation drills I found the talking to be less than daunting.

congrats on your mouth jewelry, wear it proudly and good luck.

I appreciate the "atta girl!" Yes, I imagine teaching for severals would be daunting...at least I have music breaks to look forward to as well as an "on air" partner to share the load. Yes, I'm already settling in with the new mouth jewelry. I keep thinking of what a gift it is to be able to get a healthy and attractive smile.

I have to ask. Being a radio personality in the State of Washington, what to you think Frasier would think of your decision to get braced? On a serious note how are you adjusting? Have there been times already when you have actually forgotten you have them in your mouth.

Hope all is well and I'm sure the end result will all be worth it.
