Pain? TMJ?

Pain? TMJ?
I have TMJ and constant jaw pain from an auto accident about 6 years ago. Is there anyone out there with TMJ type symptoms that has used Invisalign? Was it very painful for you?
I am in the very early stages of this process (had my final molds done on Thursday) and I was curious how someone else is doing. From what I have read, no one has really complained of severe discomfort.
Wish me luck!

TMJ and Invisalign
This is very interesting to me because I have TMJ and I am suppose to be getting braces to fix it, and I really really want to get Invisalign. I have had some people tell me it will work for me and some people not. Are you getting Invisalign to fix your bite?
Re: TMJ and Invisalign
Hello! Yes, I am getting Invisalign to hopefully correct my bite. All of my pain/TMJ type symptoms are the result of an automobile accident over 6 years ago. My face hit the steering wheel and then my head went through the windshield. Miraculously nothing was broken however; I have had jaw pain, horrible clenching at night (my bite is so off and I clench so hard, I had made new wear patterns on my teeth in six months after the accident) and a different bite ever since that day. I had never had jaw pain before-I never even had a cavity! Every specialist I've seen (and it has been quite a few) refer to my pain, severe clinching, and constantly shifting bite as TMJ. No one has made me any promises on it helping my pain. I'm just willing to try anything to help get rid of any amount of the pain I am in. If there is some glimmer of hope that braces will help, I'm going for it. I was curious about any one else's experiences who may want to share those with me.Joanna88 wrote:This is very interesting to me because I have TMJ and I am suppose to be getting braces to fix it, and I really really want to get Invisalign. Re: TMJ and Invisalign
Wow, thanks for sharing that! I have had svere TMJ for a couple years, I have a mishapen jaw joint but I also have an incorrect bite which I feel was a result of regular braces a few years ago. I have been wearing a mouthpiece to adjust my bite for a year, and now I'm suppose to get braces to make this bite permanent. I refuse to get regular braces, I really want Invisalign, and have had some people tell me it will work but some people tell me it is not good at fixing bites and open bites. Did you have to wear a mouthpiece first or did you just jump right in?Hello! Yes, I am getting Invisalign to hopefully correct my bite. TMJ
I had to have 13 spacers put in for 10 days. Then they shaved between a few teeth, did some more molds, and now I'm just waiting for my trays! Hopefully I'll have them by March 3 I'm told.
What stage of the game are you in? I haven't heard of any mouthpiece so I have no idea what that is.

I'm still trying to decide which ortho to go with because one told me I could use Invisalign to fix my TMJ and one told me I couldn't. The mouthpiece I wear is basically just repositioning my bite so my jaw joints don't rub together, and now when I take it out my back teeth don't touch, so the braces are going to move my teeth to match my new bite so I don't have to wear my mouthpiece forever. I want Invisalign so bad!
Meryaten, thank you so much for those links! I'm definitely going to look into those. What a helpful forum.Meryaten wrote:Since Invisalign can tend to cause that same sort of molar intrusion that your TMD splint has caused, my guess would be that it would not be the best choice for you. I've also read that it is poor modality where extrusion is required, which is what I would guess will be needed with your molars.
Here are a couple of articles that may be worth a read:
Clinical Limitations of Invisalign by Xiem Phan, BSc, DDS and Paul H. Ling, DDS, MDS Ortho, MOrth, FDS, RCS. Journal of the Canadian Dental Association; 2007, 73(3): 263-6.
Predictability of Successful Orthodontic Treatment using Invisalign by Robert Boyd, DDS Med, Professor and Chairman of the Department of Orthodontics, School of Dentistry, University of the Pacific.
Les Joffe is a specialist orthodontist in Harley Street, London, has written an article in the Journal of Orthodontics describing the technique and its development, as well as its advantages and disadvantages:Invisalign®: early experiences
He cites similar types of cases as being difficult to treat with Invisalign as did Boyd above.

I think many people have same kind of problem.I know that it is very painful. But don't get so depressed.
