Kittymeow84 feels the PAIN!! - second adj PICS up
Hi all!
I've been hanging about for a bit and thought I would start my own journal thread.
I'll start with the fact that I actually don't have my braces on just yet! But I'll be going in in January so I should have them on by the end of Feb! The joy.
So....Where do I start? Well I'm 23 years old and living in Melbourne. Ever since I can remember I've had my "bung tooth" - my parents simply did not have the money to fix it when I was younger. We're first generation Aussies and came from Communist Romania with a single suitcase between 4 of us.
As I've gotten older, the gap underneath my tooth has closed up completely and every day I think about how I'm one tooth away from a perfect smile. Its only now that I've finally gathered the funds together to do something about it.
Well okay, not ONE tooth, but three. My upper left lateral incisor is completely protruded from my arch at almost a 45 degree angle!! Eeep! And my two lower canines have rotated about 90 degrees.
I went to four consultations initially. The first one was very very bad....They wanted three or four of my teeth removed and only a "that'll do" result. I was very hesitant of course. Lucky I was taking KK's advice from over at the Aussie dental forum and going to get more than one opinion!!
The second ortho was great. He offered Damon brackets at a reasonable all inclusive fixed price and the confidence that he would not have to remove any teeth. The only problem was his practice is a good 15 minutes train away from me and rather inconvenient to get to if I'm to take into consideration working hours and my travel to work time of one hour in a completely different direction.
Third was with a general dentist in the CBD. He didn't really have orthodontic advise but he was very rushed and one of those pushy dentists that make you feel bad about your teeth even though you have excellent oral hygiene! He was going to refer me to an ortho and sent me off to get x-rays done.
Instead, I booked in at an East Melbourne dentist which is only 5 minutes from home. He wasn't an ortho either but a very very good dentist! He took x-rays straight away to determine where my wisdom teeth are. He told me I don't need any fillings and sent me to his ortho in the city.
And so my final consultation was my choice. He took molds of my teeth and discussed things with me. Admittedly, I forgot to ask what kind of appliances I might need
He said he'd be using self-ligating brackets on me too. I asked if they were Damons and he said "No, sometimes they work TOO fast - I use a different brand". Silly little me forgot to ask the name of those too...but they're completely clear and apparently smaller than the Damons so my guess is they are In-Ovation C's. I'm so glad because I'm really not keen on those coloured ligatures and I just want something that is as inconspicuous as possible.
I'm booked in for the 31st of Jan where he says he'll be taking photos and I'm not sure what else.
I really hope I don't need my wisdom teeth removed before the braces go on, but I'll see what the dentist says. My funds don't stretch that far yet!
Anyway - here are the only pics I could scrounge up. It doesn't show my bottom canines but as you can see, the incisor is quite annoying and visible! I don't like sharing my pics with friends cos I can't smile properly!
This one kind of shows how far out it is. Notice how all my other teeth are PERFECT??? Its so frustrating! Even my molars are nicely aligned and only need a smidgen of shifting.
And this shows how far out it sticks from the top. Most angles look terrible I also have a severe midline shift, about 2 -3mm and about 4mm deep bite. The ortho says he'll make room by moving all my teeth OUT. If you look closely at this pic you can see the teeth closer to my bung incisor are a bit "caved in".
I'm so desperate for a perfect smile! My teeth would be nice looking if they weren't so crooked! The ortho also said he's never ever seen a case like mine.
Anyways, wish me luck - I can't wait to show proper pics and get those braces on too.

kitty, welcome to the boards! Congratulations on taking a big step in correcting your teeth! I kind of like your little "bung tooth," I think it gives your smile some character. But I will be more than happy to see your journey as your smile unfolds!

Just a few more dodgy pics I took with my phone camera. Sorry if its too many - but I just love looking at everyone else's teeth - so fascinating watching the change!!
Front on. You can only kind of see my canines turned around.
Side on. See how my molars are pretty okay? And you can see EXACTLY where everything gets messy. It fits very nicely - it just aint straight!
Check out 'dem fangs!!
Anyways....I probably wont have any more pics til I go to the ortho..I'm gonna start being nice and actually commenting on others amazing journeys too

Bump.
Just fixing my links cos I set my album to private. If Photobucket asks you for a password it is "fangs"
Only two more weeks til my next consult!! SO EXCITED. Been obsessing hardcore about my teeth.
Also discovered two of my friends are getting their teeth fixed.
One is a school friend who is getting Invisalign - her ortho is in the exact same building as mine, but three floors below. She gets hers on the 11th of Feb which will be very close to my Brace Day if all goes to plan.
Another is a girl I just met who is very cool. She had braces when she was younger but her teeth are shifting again. Not sure when she's getting hers on but its soon. It'll be good to have someone I know in person to talk to it all about.

Thanks EmbraceJCT
Well UPDATE time!
I had my second consult with Dr Schwartz today. He took photos of my teeth and we looked at my x-rays and molds. My teeth looked so tiny as the molds - I knew they were small but not that small!
He was pretty impressed that I knew so much about braces and all the different treatment options. We talked about the brackets he'll be putting on me and I was confirmed in my suspicions that they'll be In-Ovation C on top. He said that back in the day, my case would have required extractions and I said how thankful I was that they wont be necessary. My face shape apparently is not a good shape for extractions and it would have been detrimental to my appearance.
My molars are perfectly aligned and all that will be done is moving my front teeth from almost completely vertical to the ideal, slightly tipped out angle. This will in turn create enough space for the three teeth that need to fit and also open up my bite. I won't be needing extra appliances either.
SO!! Next week I go in to get the dreaded spacers put in as I am having bands on my "six year old molars" - He's putting them on both the top and bottom but only the top row of brackets and archwire will be placed initially.
Any ideas on which are generally called the "six year old molars"? Are they the furthest back?
Also - I'm a bit silly cos I completely forgot to mention that I play a contact sport (Muay Thai kickboxing) and will need a decent mouthguard. I'll tell him next week when I get the spacers put in. I might ask at kickboxing tonight too if they've ever had any fighters with braces. Interesting.
.....and finally BRACE DAY 14th of Feb!!!!. Yes...that's Valentine's Day. No matter.....My boyfriend can feed me lots of chocolate mousse and soft yummy foods
Oh - and I'll have the photos Dr Schwartz took emailed to me and I'll post those as soon as I get them! Yay!!! Excited!

Hi KittyMeow,
Congrats on getting your B-Day, your teeth look like they may be a pretty simple case to crack so here's hoping you have good progress!! I do kickboxing do, doing my black belt next year, so it was a concern for me about the braces thing. So far I've just warned everyone that if they knock my mouth I'll kill them!! I don't get on too well with gumshields so don't fancy a mouth guard and we pretty much just do semi-contact during training so fingers crossed I'll be ok. I did ask my instructor just to knock out all my teeth pre-braces so I could just skip the hard work and get some fancy veneers on my insurance. He said no

Thanks guys!
Teabing so you get by without the mouthguard? Well I don't fight (yet) so its only sometimes I get hit in the face. Still - I'll see what the ortho says too.
I got the email with my pics in it too so here they are.
Can't wait to get the braces on! Yay!!

That's awesome that everyone is so considerate at your clubTeabing wrote:Yeah I do at the moment, everyone knows that I have the braces so they are just careful to avoid my face - which is great for me!
I asked my trainer today if they had had anyone in with braces before and he was like "YEH! Heaps!!" and proceeded to tell me they have a girl that does BJJ who is also a dental technician and makes the specialised sports mouthguards for a fraction of the normal price!!! Like $60 for a customised guard!! I was expecting well into the $100's so I'm very happy. They'll set me up with her and I'll get the guard two weeks after the molds are taken.
SWEET!!

Update:
Spacers on since Friday.
THEY HURT.
Little buggers! Hehe. The pain has been steadily increasing since I got them on.
Getting used to the feeling of them between my back teeth now. Its just the front ones that hurt now - mostly the canines which I can't even touch. Ow.
I feel like grinding my teeth together at the same time as wanting to pull them out! Ha!
BUT - if this is as bad as it gets then braces will be a breeze!
