Possible gum grafting

#1 Post by SherwoodForest »

Hello. I haven't posted in a long time, and I have had my top braces on for 14 months; 9 months for the bottom. I just had an adjustment today, and I was told that my gums are starting to receed around the bottom canines. I go back for an x-ray next month to see how my roots are doing, but if it gets worse I will have to have gum grafting. I knew this was one of those issues that can come up when wearing braces, but what exactly causes this? Until today, I have been wearing the heavy elastics (since June) and they have created a lot of movement. Is it caused by too much movement? :?

My ortho wouldn't even begin anything with me until I had grafting done. I wish that I could say it was a breeze, but it wasn't. I only hope that I NEVER have to do it again.

I'm 40 and getting braced later this week.

I had gum recession due to the way I brushed my teeth and my poor bite. I had to have gum surgery before the ortho would consider putting braces on me.

The procedure was brilliant - the ortho suggested using donated material rather than grafting from the roof of my mouth. His suggestion was spot on the money - I barely was aware that I had had my gums grafted. Two thumbs up.
