I cried
Upon returnig to my office after being braced my caddy co worker who has PERFECT teeth said Let me see? I forced a smile and she blurted: "Gracious, it looks like they put a railroad trestle in there."

First rude comment...
Yesterday was my first day back to work since being braced ( I got top and bottoms on Oct. 31st and took a couple sick days to get "used to it")
I was REALLY nervous. I work on a college campus, and although I am 23 (a recent grad of the school), I didn't want to come off as "young-looking". My coworkers were awesome, and I was so amazed at how easy my day was going (other than lunch, of course---so I have now swtiched to slim fast shakes at work--easy and lose a few pounds at the same time.)
Anyway, a student walks into my office yesterday afternoon and says:
Rude Student: "What is that all over your teeth?!?!"
Me: "Braces..."
RS: "But your an adult!!!"
Me: "Didn't you know that it is the new hotest thing?"
RS: "That SUCKS!! I bet it is horrible to kiss!"
Me: "We didn't seem to have a problem with it last night!"
I was really proud of myself for handling it so well! My greatest concern was how I was going to look and handle the change...but I am getting more used to it each day. I am suprised when I look in the mirror in the morning, but I am hoping that will get easier. I am just glad that I am quick with the responce to student comments...
So, overall, 1 bad thing in 5 days, I can handle that--especially with rude, immature college students!
I am better than that! We all are!

"I never noticed your teeth were crooked?" If I hear it one more time !! My teeth aren't crooked, I just have "bunny teeth" and a horrendous bite. I find it rude that people have to elaborate on how THEY never noticed or THEY wouldn't do this or that. Mind your own business is what I say!!

It never ceases to amaze me how incredibly rude and nosy people are these days. Luckily, I've only received one comment about my braces from a young girl, about 5 years old while out shopping. She asked me why I had braces and wanted to know if my boyfriend had them too! Her father apologized and appeared mortified that his kid was asking a complete stranger about her braces! I was laughing to myself....I'm 45, married and the kid must have associated braces with a teenager.
I mostly get lots of big smiles from all of the other braced people I see about and about. It's an epidemic where I live, apparently!

No rude comments since braced...mostly people telling me their experiences when they had them when they were younger.
I can relate to being the babysitter and the kids making jokes about my fangs though...ever since I was 12 I have remembered that day and wished I could get braces.
Here's something sweet though: My 8 yr old boy.
Kid: Mommy, why are you getting braces?
Me: so my teeth will look nice and pretty.
Kid: But I don't want you to change...I love you just the way you are (gives me a hug).
Since I got them, he doesn't really seem to notice and his friend was only concerned that I could not eat his Dots out of his Halloween candy "Yay, she can't eat them, they're mine!" LOL

you're too old ....
I've only had one particularly cutting remark which was said by a male friend (who has perfect teeth) whilst staring at my braces in total disbelief:
"You can't have braces, you're TOO OLD!"
Thanks, mate.
OK, I am mature - 43 - but I still want to get my teeth straight ...

I haven't had anything that I would consider rude.
My family keeps saying you don't need braces. My friends say I'm wasting my money and that my teeth look fine. Yeah, but to me they don't and my bite is off.
Little kids like to watch you brush your teeth in public bathrooms. Right after I got my braces, a little girl around 4 or 5 was staring at me singing "brush, brush, brush" while I was brushing. Her mom was embarrassed, but I thought it was funny and cute.
I've not told anyone in my boyfriend's family. I'm not sure what they would say. They like to gossip about things and I don't exactly want to be talked about. His grandma says things that are hurtful sometimes, but she doesn't realize that they are. My favorite: "Get in here and make yourself useful" in regards to helping out in the kitchen, while my boyfriend and his 2 male cousins sat on the couch. Sorry, I'm not stuck in the 50's. My boyfriend thinks they won't make a big deal about it, but who knows.

Ok so I know this is an old topic, but I have had some rude people say some rude things to me.
Before I had braces, my friends and I were at a bar and the kid sitting next to me that I had just met told me my teeth were F***** up and I should get them fixed because they were holding back how beautiful i was..... idk if he thought that was nice or what but.. it wasnt.
My friends like to make fun of me and joke about the food i get caught... i dont think its funny lol.
But i have learned to say this
"I may have messed up teeth, but im fixing them, you however are stuck with that horrible personality for the rest of your life." YAY!!!

Ooooh great little comeback there! Keep that up! Heh I always say that the best way to take care of ignorant people/comments is to come back with wit, rather than showing that you are upset/angry by yelling, etc.
Hm, well the first time I had braces from 11-13 I would get teased by my younger cousins here and there, and there were kids at school who would only have them a year or something and rub it in all of our faces who had them longer, etc.
When I got them again in 2006, and was with my hubby picking up an antibiotic at a pharmacy, the lady said "I assume he's your father," in reference to my husband! (Note: Adam(my husband) is only 8 years my senior, NOT 18 or something like that!) I must say that I was laughing hysterically and sorta liked it but was taken aback at the same time. I mean, I sorta asked myself, is she just SAYING that because I have braces and therefore assumes I am a "teenager" or something???? Then again, she was old enough to be my grandmother herself, so, I sorta think that she was serious in her observation! Either way---AHH!

Re: Rude things people have said to you
That's not nice!!!!! That is one rude professor!Aradia252 wrote:I was in class one day and the professor was going around to us individually, talking about midterms and what not. She sat next to me, and as I was talking she said "What is it that you always have in your mouth?!" I was shocked!! When I flashed her a smile, she made a comment like "Oh poor you..." then went on to tell me that she "prefers crooked teeth" and about how "we shouldn't care about beauty ideals." I thought this was very rude and unprofessional. But I'm sure there have been ruder things said... any one?

LOL! Any other good comebacks that people have used?maddiesmom wrote: Another comeback I have:
"It was between the braces and the boob job but my insurance won't pay for the boob job." That tends to shut people up!!! HA! Take that.
Like Ev's Mom, the usual comment I get (if people say anything at all about my braces - most don't) is, "I never noticed your teeth were crooked before."
I think they mean it to be nice, but I never quite know how to answer! It makes it sound like they think I'm doing something unnecessary, and I feel I have to defend myself or explain that actually they really were quite crooked and crowded before. Argh!
