very very dissappointed and worryed
well am four months out of surgery and i was really pleased with the outcome but not of my ortho work
i had a os appointment and they said without me having to voice any of my concerns there were alot of gaps and my top arch was still quite narrow soo this should be further expanded by the ortho
and this is axactly what i wanted to here i will post some pictures but my top arch is still very narrow and i feel it need to be expanded further soo at my ortho oappointment as i sat down in the seat and she put my glasses and apron on to begin work i told her what the surgeon said and that i felt thats what was needed done as well
at this she looked annoyed stoped all work she was about to begin took my apron off and said she doesn't think that there is any need and that i have to relise where i started at this i said yes i started with a severe under bite that has now been corrected through surgery but i still don't have much of a bite to speak of its completely open at the back none of my teeth touch and i now have a overbite or over jet not sure which one and am still unable to bite through things just the oosite way round and my lowers are all still inclined backwards .
she whipped out my moulds and pointed out none of my teeth were in contact before all this and i said and they still arn't and i have booked my self in for an appointment to speak to one of the head orthos to discuss my treatment but she refused to even check how things are going
she seemed to think we were done when i really really would look into getting it done private if she takes them off now
i will post pictures later as i have work in the morning and need sleep just needed it off my chest

Ahh im having a similar problem with my authodontist aswell at the moment. Im now 8 months post op. Up untill recently my teeth still didnt slot together properly, they sort of do now but i sitll have an small open bite on my left side.
Dont you find when ever you try to ask your authodontist questions or tell me your problems they act as as if you are being a nusnace and insulting their work?
My teeth are still not perfect, yet however last time she saw me she said this has been gonig on for too long and has booked me a debanding date for next week! So apparently im getting my braces of next week. My mums thinking about me going private too..
(Im from the UK aswell)

freerideuk, It sounds like you are going through alot right now. Did you have SARPE also? Was that surgery even in he picture ever? It seems weird to be addressing a narrow upper jaw now. I hope the ortho can help you out with now more surgery.
RPE in on Jan 7, 2008
SARPE on Jan 11, 2008 expanded 7 mm
RPE out on May 14, 2008
freerideuk,
I don't have a clue as to how things work in the NHS, but I would think that if the orthodontist is not done, the orthodontist is NOT DONE, and should continue to work on your bite until things are satisfactory.
My post-op bite is not close to being finished, and if my orthodontist told me that braces were coming off tomorrow, I would be getting in touch with an attorney but quick!

What was your bite like after surgery, freeride? Did your teeth line up or was there some open bite then? Also, were there gaps pre-surgery or created since? I have to say, I'm surprised your surgeon brought up arch width at this point in time. One would think that this would be addressed pre-surgery or that he would have expressed his concern then. Did both your ortho and surgeon agree you were ready at the time of surgery?
Defintely make that appointment with the head ortho & keep pushing freeride, but as you well know, doctors are NEVER wrong, and I wouldn't rule out the possiblity of some 'Monkey Tossing' as we call it. Although the way you describe it, your ortho certainly sounds like she is out of her depth.
I'll be very curious to hear how this plays out. Good luck!

Hi freeride
sorry to hear your having such a rough time if your not happy with the ortho, then isnt there another ortho at the hospital that can give you a second opinion? Im pretty sure its your right as a patient to ask for a 2nd opinion.
Cant understand why they didnt expand your arch before surgery, as my ortho spent months expanding my upper arch using braces and powerchains etc, which eventually meant only having the lower jaw done, but there was no question of doing the surgery until my teeth and bite were as good as they could be.
You really should speak to someone, and asap
good luck

Hi
I'm a UK NHS patient too. I was referred two years ago to the team at a major London dental hospital with a large training component, spent 15 months on the waiting list and finally got braced a fortnight ago. At some stage in the dim and distant future I'll be getting upper and lower surgery.
Whilst I've been impressed with the clinical practitioners who I have seen so far I have never had a formal written diagnosis setting out what is wrong with my bite or what/how they plan to correct things. I understand things will evolve as we go along but I do rather wish I had a formal road map stating what the NHS did and didn't plan to do. Did they ever give you a proper list of the goals of treatment?
Freeride - hope things work out well for you, sorry to hijack the thread!

my treatment up till the surgery and through surgery was amazing and i am sure if you ask for it to be written down they will do soo

Hi freeride, sorry to hear things aren't going so well!
How does your bite feel and can you eat ok? I take it your Ortho does intend to at least give you a stable functional bite, even if they can't widen your uppers. He is probably right about your uppers relapsing though.
I've been in retainers since December now and while my teeth have remained straight, alas I'm back to only my wisdom's touching as the molars have relapsed. I new this was a possibility and it's just typical for me! But at least I can eat, chewing some things is tiring but I'm not going to starve!
I understand your disappointment in not getting that perfect bite, after everything we go through it's what we're looking forward to at the end! It would be better if they told us more about the complications and limitations of this treatment, so we are better prepared for the results.
If there are compromises to be made I'd rather know upfront!
My bite has been improved but not fixed. The openbite is much smaller while my overbite remains the same. On the other hand the new face is a definite improvement and I don't bother so much about my hooked nose anymore. My compromise.
When do you see Mr K next cause if you're not happy with your result you should say, they are supposed to be working together!
All the best and hope the elastics are going well!
