has anybody used invisalign retainers? what do you think?

If you have finished with your orthodontic treatment and are wearing retainers (or will be soon), this is a special place to connect with others in your (enviable) situation. Ask a question or make a comment about life post-braces.

has anybody used invisalign retainers? what do you think?

#1 Post by yvart »

I finished with Invisalign Summer '07 after 14 months of treatment, then had a front permanent bridge replaced, a veneer added to a canine, and finally have a very nice smile. It took almost 2 years, all told, to get everything just right. But I am soooo happy!! I went to an orthodontist and a special cosmetic dentist to get the result I wanted.

I currently have upper and lower Essix retainers. These were included free with my Invisalign treatment. Now that my teeth are how I want them, I am thinking of spending the $575 my ortho asks for the Invisalign retainers.

Has anyone tried these, do you like them, do they work better than Essix, any thoughts?

Thanks so much,

At that stage (retention), I had no idea there was a difference between the two. Did your ortho elaborate on what the invisalign retainers offer?

Invisalign retainers are really new, since Dec. 07

here's some info I found on the web about the new Invisalign retainers:
"An Invisalign retainer fits and looks like a regular aligner, however, it's much more durable and lasts longer. In fact, it's about five times more durable than commercially available thermoplastic retainers. It has to be strong because it is meant to last a long time unlike a normal aligner which is changed every two weeks.

The is designed to stabilize and hold a patient's teeth in place so that the beautiful smile the patient paid for stays in place. There is some elasticity of the material so it pops on and stays comfortably in place. "

By thermoplastic retainers, I guess they mean like Essix. Also the invisalign retainers are laser-cut, so they are less bulky than Essix. My ortho said that she thinks they are slightly more bulky, therefore stronger, than the aligners used to move teeth.

She would have to take new impressions with that gooey blue stuff (just like at the beginning of the invisalign treatment) to send off to have the retainers made. They would supply me with 3 pairs, so I would have extras for that price ($575).

So I just wondered if anyone had tried this Invisalign retainer yet.

I am waiting for my cosmetic dentist to send me my "after" photo, then I can post it so you all can see the improvement between the braces and the veneer, etc.

Thanks for your advice.
