Killer vegetables...

#1 Post by cosmicgirl »

A warning to those (especially us brave souls with helixes!!) who are tempted to eat raw celery.

DON'T !!!!!

I was quite happily making a pan of celery soup, when I decided to nibble on a stalk, as I was feeling SO guilty about stuffing my face with chocolate Easter eggs yesterday...
AAAGH - as I was chewing it, strands started to lodge in my helix and when I tried to swallow - I couldn't!! Bits ended up halfway down my throat, cue gagging and retching. Finally had to fish it out with my fingers...
I thought spinach was bad - learned my lesson the hard way there too - but this was in another league!

cosmicgirl I know how you feel! Firstly I have also stuffed my face with easter egg chocolate and secondly a similar experience happened to me in the first few days of being braced.

I decided to have spaghetti for tea as I thought it was nice and soft and unoffensive, how wrong was I! As you said one end of it got stuck on the brace and the rest of it was half way down my throat while I am gagging and choking to death.

Beware it's not just vegetables!

Wow! Celery is actually a food that I haven't had since being braced surprisingly. i haven't had any issues with spinach nor pasta. Pasta being a staple in my diet, i would starve to death if I avoided it LOL
Brace date: 5/2/2007

I hate celery so no chance of that happening to me. But I've had some bad experiences with other long foods that have got stuck halfway down my throat while attached to my braces.

I was eating an orange and hadn't done a good job of peeling it. I swallowed a piece which got stuck in my throat because a bit of the peel was caught in my braces....I nearly choked to death. All the juice went into my lungs too which wasn't pleasant. I cut everything up into tiny bits now like a baby

I know!!
And there's all this talk of vegetables being good for you - huh!
At least chocolate doesn't try to choke you... all the more reason to keep eating it.

Another killer vegi is asparagus. Same thing as the celery.... some stays in your braces and the rest chokes you to death.
I say the should make chocolates that are shaped like vegetables that way we get the best of both worlds. :-#)

Remember what Ogden Nash said.
"Celery raw, develops the jaw but celery stewed is more quietly chewed."

I also had the "ghastly near death from choking" experience with celery (and cooked spinach) getting caught halfway between the helices and my stomach.

I've learned to tear up the spinach to get the stem bits out and just leave the leafy bits...celery...well...I cut it up into tiny tiny bits :)

now, don't get me started on corn and helices....jesus!
