Hi Faerydust,

Yep, things DO get worse before they get better. My two front teeth are starting to overlap but they were straight before I got braced. My ortho said it's normal to see unwanted movement in some teeth but they will work themselves out. :D

Your teeth are gonna be beautiful when your done!!
Keep smilin'! :)

Thanks jenny! I'm not worried about it anymore. I was just being paraoid. I trust my ortho and I'm only in the beginnings of treatment so I don't know why I was so worried.

I had my extractions today. I was scheduled for 3:00pm, but didn't get called in until around 4pm because my dentists office only has one room with nitrous and someone was already in it.

The extra wait combined with not knowing what the experience would be like made me super nervous. I got called in by the oral surgeons assistant and she had ceramic braces too! She had me sign papers and got me all settled into my chair. I asked if I could have the nitrous started before the injections and she said sure. Next, the oral surgeon came in and introduced himself. He really wanted to take all my wisdom teeth out, but I told him my ortho said I could keep my top ones and he said "fine, but in my opinion it's better to get them all out, they don't make food taste better". I insisted on leaving the top ones alone and that was that. He reviewed my x-rays and then rubbed my gums with some purple analgesic gel on what looked like Q-tips and then left them in my mouth for a little while so it could take affect.

Next they got the nitrous started and I immediately felt a tingly sensation all over my body. It felt like my body was really tired and relaxed. I felt like I was taking a really nice nap, but conscious at the same time.

I remember snorting while breathing through the nose mask and the oral surgeon and assistant both laughed and told me "no snorting allowed". :) After a couple minutes the OS did the injections. I felt them, but it wasn't painful. He extracted the upper premolars first and I didn't really feel it and wasn't really paying much attention. I did hear the cracking sound and thought it sounded like a tree branch breaking off of a tree.

My thoughts then wandered all over the place, like imagining myself in my bed taking a nap, thinking about the pictures of teeth and their internal structures from my anatomy book, thinking of my cat, and then remembering what a classmate told me the music sounded like while on nitrous, then realizing I forgot my ipod, but there was a radio on outside the room and I could hear the music, but it sounded normal to me.

Next he did the left bottom wisdom tooth and I don't remember much of that, but after that I started gagging because I felt like something was touching the roof of my mouth. The assistant kept telling me to relax, there's nothing in my mouth, but I felt something and kept gagging for like 2 minutes. The OS said "I'd have the other tooth out already if it weren't for you gagging". They told me that I stopped swallowing and when they said that I swallowed a few times and felt better.

The OS finally got to my last tooth, the right lower impacted wisdom tooth, which was the stubborn one. He mentioned something about it being much harder than the last one and something about a wayward root that didn't show in the xray and it being kind of unusual. I felt lots of pulling with that tooth and I think he might of pressed on my cheekbone for leverage.

Once that tooth was out and the OS was all done, the assistant put gauze in, turned the nitrous off and gave me some oxygen for a few minutes, then sent me on my way with instructions and my pain killer script. I felt a little sad that the warm, fuzzy, sleepy nitrous feeling was over, but I was happy that my experience was pain free.

Now I'm just laying in bed. The cable is out right now which is really disappointing. I'm still having lots of bleeding and am changing the gauze frequently.

Just wanted to share my experience. It wasn't so bad really, but that's easy to say when the pain hasn't kicked in yet.

congrats on your extractions, are u having pain?
im jealous i never had nitrous
my dentist just does the same thing use a Qtip to rub the gel, give me injections and do the extraction, i guess he knows i can handle it
u described branches of a tree breaking, thats what i heard too for my premolars, but my roots broke on both almost to the tip

I was actually feeling sick reading your post :FeelSick: . I'm such a chicken when it comes to needles, blood, pain etc! :? I had to be put out to have my wisdom teeth removed.

Glad to hear you're all done(you're so much braver then me!). I hope you get along well with them and in no time they'll be healed!!

well done for getting your extractions over with, give yourself a pat on the back :D I know what you mean about the cracking sound from when I had my extractions, not the greatest of noises but I think all things get amplified when they happen in our mouths so they sound far worse than they are!

sabrina - No pain at all. The only time I felt pain was before taking the pain killers when the numbness wore off. I've been taking them regularly ever since and I honestly don't feel a thing. Oxycodone is good stuff! :D

The nitrous felt so great that I didn't want my extractions to be over with. I'm serious! Even though I knew what was happening, I felt disconnected from it and wasn't really paying attention. It's the strangest feeling. Like when they did the injections, I think I was only aware of one of them and that's because I felt a pressure and they told me "this is the last one", but I was feeling so warm, fuzzy, tingly, and relaxed that I really couldn't have cared less what they did to me.

I used to be jealous of everyone who slept through there extractions, but I actually quite enjoyed the nitrous feeling.

jenny - I'm sorry it made you feel sick. :( Trust me, I was really freaked out at the idea of being awake and aware of what was going on. I really wanted to be put out, but my dentists office doesn't do that. I was so amazed at how relaxed I felt with the nitrous. All of my fear was completely gone within minutes of breathing it.

I was also afraid of how my mouth would feel and taste afterward. It's a little gross because of the blood taste. I got a bit dizzy when changing my gauze rolls when some blood started pouring out of my mouth. I bled for about 3 hours and went through lots of gauze. I don't think I was biting down on it hard enough.

elpi - I'm so glad I got it over with! It went much better than I expected and I never would of thought that I would be in no pain at all the same night. Woke up this morning with no pain, drank some water and brushed my teeth. I'm feeling great except a bit drowsy from my pain killers. Starting to get hungry. Think I'm gonna have a yogurt smoothie.

Thanks for reading!! :)

Had my first adjustment today. I had the assistant call in the ortho so I could ask him a few questions, like what should expect in the way of wires and elastics. He said I'll be getting elastics soon and will wear them throughout treatment. So far nothing special was done to close the extraction gaps, but I got a new top wire that goes all the way to my molars. Eventually I'll get some type of different wire configuration to address the gaps, but I don't remember exactly what he said.

On the bottom just the ligs were changed, but the same wire was re-used. The ortho said my lower right central incisor won't be added to the wire for another 3 or so months because it's so far back from the others that the bracket would pop off from the tension if it was attached now.

Pretty uneventful so far. I forgot to ask what brand my braces are, but I'll remember at some point before they come off. I also told my ortho about this forum and we talk about and show pics of our progress. He thought it was neat and even told me about using the macro function (which I figured out long ago, haha) to get good close up pics. He said not to trust everything people post because it could be inaccurate info and I told him that I know it's important to get a professional opinion.

Here are my progress pics and pics of my gaps:

I have to take more pics later to show the progress in the bottom teeth.

My extraction areas are healing pretty well. Still have some pain, but taking Excedrin helps. I've been eating mostly soft foods like easy mac. I'll probably avoid anything poky or crunchy for awhile. Pain is not really in the holes, but more in my jaw bones.

Guess that's it for my little update! :)

bracedagain - I already had my braces on, but thanks still!

sabrina - Yeah, my top teeth are super sore. :? Feels almost worse than extraction pain. I just kept telling myself it won't last, but it's so annoying. My bite feels off too. :(

jenny - The top laterals that were slightly behind the centrals are coming out and forward. The left (right in pic) is moving faster which is why the centrals are slanted sideways. From the pics I can see the right lateral making slow progress. :)

Sorry to hear you're in pain, but you should feel happy that you have made a lot of progress! When I felt pain after an adjustment I would try to think about the progress this adjustment is creating, not the pain. 8)
