thanks for the post steph.. i am pain free from the ulcer.. the day after i stopped taking the clindamycin was the worst. i woke up numerous times at night and i couldnt fall asleep. each day after it got better. and it was pretty much non existent by the past friday when i noticed i was eating ketchup and all these acidic foods lol. i realized i was in no pain and i was very relieved.. it took about 4 days or so, but things are finally looking up post op!

I am glad to hear that everything is feeling better. Hopefully you won't have to go on that medication again but if you do, at least you know what you have to do to prevent them from happening again.

if im ever presribed that antibiotic again, im going to tell the doc to prescribe me another one. even when i switched from clindamycin to penicillin, i had no indigestion from penicillin or any side effects for that matter.

back on the ice!

#99 Post by JayC »

so as you guys know i was cleared to go back to contact sports by my surgeon last week or so.. only 6 weeks post op! its been almost officially 2 mths today, and i was back on the ice yesterday. i was very rusty and it wasnt until the 3rd period when I really found my legs timing and coordination back.

amongst other things i had to get used to the damn jaw protector i had put on my helmet. i am going to wear this thing for another 1-2 months which is approx about 4-8 games. i sorta got used to it near the end but it def impedes my peripheral vision.

pic of the new helmet setup :)

not a great thing in a hi tempo tier 1 hockey. was also able to push myself 100% in terms of intensity and weights during my friday workout as well with no implications of jaw discomfort. i almost never clench y teeth when i worked out before anyways so that was not an issue. i was sore as hel to say the least all weekend lol.

so i went in for my 2 month post op appt ,. with my surgeon. everything went well and i paid for an optional xray to see how far along the healing actually is for peace of mind. so far it looks really good. all the blackened areas from the cut are now filled with white. its probably not 100% helaed obviously but it sure looks damn close :). the surgeon was very pleased at how things are healing and somehwat surprised . "wow...looks good" i heard him say under his breath. then he asked me if i knew when i was going to get my braces off cuz he said things are healing very well and that my bite looked good.

i emailed my ortho as to when i was gonna be getting my braces off but he hasnt replied yet. and i dont wanna bug him again with another email so i willjust wait until my next appt in june. not a big deeal.

What GREAT news JayC!!!! That is wonderful! Let us know if your ortho emails you back about getting the braces off.

AND! I must ask you something! I have been searching all over the internet to try to find a helmet with jaw protection which would still be cool to wear in the summer. I never thought about it, but maybe a hockey helmet would work! I ride/jump compete horses which I have to give up this Summer, but I thought I might be able to start back to flatwork sooner than 12 weeks if I had something which protected my jaw and not just my head. Naturally, my OS mightt have a different opinion regarding the idea, but it's worth it to me to ask if I can find a viable option....

Can you remove the visor?

Can you tell I'm having a hard time giving up my passion this Summer? Oh Whaaa whaaa; if these are my problems, life is good!

i would be a hypocrite if i told you not to ride for the whole summer. the visor and jaw protector are 2 totally separate pieces. the jaw protector is actually custom made frmo a full face shield. just used a dremel and a drill to customize it the way it is rin that pic.

im not too sure what i could suggest?if youre willing to wait a good 2 months without riding, you jaw should be good enough to go without havign to waer any protection. what are the odds of you hurting your jaw from riding btw? i know in hockey its fairly high youll get it bumped at least a bit here and there.

My arguement exactly! Especially if I am doing flatwork in the beginning. If I were to fall, the odds of landing on my jaw are pretty slim! Usually, it's a limb used to break the fall which is most at risk. The only concern I think would be a possible and perhaps, significant, jarring impact with the ground if I did come off, but I can't remember ever coming off doing flatwork. In reality, I think the the chances of getting bumped in the jaw are much greater just working with them on the ground than while mounted, and it looks like this shield would at least address that, but OS gets the last word.

My good friend (her team won last year's national pond hockey championship---go figure) is staying with me in a couple weeks. Perfect! I'll ask her to bring some helmets to look at! Thanks!

Meryaten~ A fellow equestrian! :D

The opportunity of riding across moors of the English countryside would almost, I say, almost be worth the naughtiness from the aforementioned steed! Ooooo someday!

Thanks for sharing; it makes me feel better about starting up at 8 weeks if another rider thinks the same way.
