DAY 6 at 49 years - First Post (EVER!)

#1 Post by Latte »

My name is Marilyn---Hadn't thought much about braces until it was determined I had "resorption" of my front left tooth. Root canal ruled out - so am to get an implant. My choice was to extract the tooth and live with a "Flipper" while the implant took to the bone. I didn't like the idea of removing a retainer and eating with no front tooth for three months! Because my bottom teeth hit square into the middle of top teeth, the conclusion between consults with Ortho, Dentist and implant guy was that braces would assure the longevity of implant and would allow natural tooth to remain until last 3 months of ortho when I would have extraction/implant/wire natural tooth back into braces and then have my crown ready on the day braces are removed.
Now, day 6... this week has not been fun, but would not call it painful. I have the turbos on backs of front teeth - quite an adjustment! so I am calling what I eat my "Ortho Diet". Elected to have Damon - all silver, as was recommended by Ortho. He said there are less repairs (stay glued on better) and therefore no delays. I will be turning 50 next spring with braces on. My daughters all say this makes me look "young"! Not fun, but manageable.

Hi Latte, good luck with your braces. I am also getting an eventual implant of my canine, which is the main reason for my braces. My braces have been on for two days and I have been getting some great information from this forum.
My kids keep looking into my mouth to try to figure out what's going on!!
take care!!

That's cute that your daughters say your braces make you look young. I'm hoping for the same effect (I'm 41). :)

Welcome Latte,
I too in the 50 plus club. I've been in Damon 3 braces (all metal) since September 2007. It's been quite a ride...most days are pretty good. I generally forget about them until I see someone I haven't run into for a while, then I find myself getting self-conscious and making excuses. Bad bite, TMJ, etc. Who the heck cares? I guess we're programmed to think improving ourselves for vanity is wrong, but if it's medical, we're fine. Ha. Oh well, that said, I am glad I have them, but look forward to the the post brace days. :) I am now wearing elastics to correct a slight overjet and overbite. I too have bite turbos, mine are on the top canine teeth. It felt so strange at first, but now I'm getting used to them more and more. Hang in there, you'll find you adjust to most anything they can throw at you--eventually. I look forward to following your progress.

I'm 38 and just finished my braces treatment. I work at the university and throughout the years I wore braces the university lunch cafe staff used to ask for my student card at the counter. I blame it on the braces :-*
Case: Impacted canines, crowding & crossbite.
Treatment: SARPE 2004/10/6, RPE 2004/9/28 - 2005/1/31, w-arch until 2005/11/22, impacted canines extracted 2005/5/18.
Braces on: top 2005/6/2, bottom 2005/8/30.
Braces off: 2008/6/9.
Retainers, phase one: expanding Hawley retainer 24/7, bonded retainers on top & bottom.
Retainers, phase two: Hawley on top, bonded both top & bottom, positioner for night time use.

Hi
This is also my first post.

I'm 48 yrs old and just got braces 8 days ago. Trying to get use to them!
I have a open bite and will need orthognathic surgery next year by that time I hope I will be mentally prepared.

Had braces as a kid & surgery but relapes about 6 yrs ago. Braces sure have came a long way from 1973! As a kid this was nothing but as adult everything scares me.

This is a great web site! So glad to have found it!

Hiya Latte (I like your name as I am addicted to coffee drinks and also work at a cafe). :-1

This is my first post as well. Congrats on getting braced at 50! I'm 37 and got braces on July 15, after 20 years of wanting my teeth fixed!

I am rather glad I am getting braces when the technology is so much more advanced now. I have metal Damon brackets and I can already see a huge difference after only a few weeks! I too, have bite turbos on the back of my front teeth which are the only things I reeeeeeally hate but otherwise I'd be chomping the brackets off my back molar! I was lisping terribly the first three weeks but it's not as bad now.

I will need surgery to bring down an impacted canine in about six months. I am pretty nervous about having a hole in my mouth while they make space for the canine. :GapToothed:

Not fun, no, but it's all worth it (as many former "braced" people have told me)! I am just so glad I don't have to give up coffee while wearing these things!

Cheers!

Hello everyone! Thank you all for posting on this forum as I have found a wealth of information that has really given me a better attitude about this process. I am 38 (39 in 1 month) & am getting braces for the 1st time tomorrow morning. I'm going with the Damon system on the bottom & Invisalign on the top.

I'm both excited & mortified at the same time but I'm really hoping to deal with the uncomfortableness of the whole thing with a good attitude.

I'm sure I'll be complaining a bit for a few weeks but I'm really looking forward to the results!

Hi latte
welcome to the board and congrats on becoming braced!

I've a similar situ to you...I have lost my top front left incisor altogther now. My tooth was broken during surgery when I was a kid, then I got a crown and now I have a HORRID denture. And if that isn't bad enough, it's smaller than my lateral incisor because the way my teeth bite together, my bottom teeth bite the tooth part of the denture off

So now I'm in braces top and bottom at aged 31 and due to have lower jaw surgery and genio in 3 years time. And at the very end of it all...my top front tooth will be restored...either by implant or bridge.

Good luck with your treatment :)
