Re: Having second thoughts at 60

HHB wrote:I have been reading this forum with great interest. I am 60 years old, and scheduled to have Damon braces put on next week. However, I go between being excited about it to feeling foolish for doing this at such an advanced age! It's a considerable expense, and I have been living with crooked teeth all these years. Some of the stories about the pain and inconvenience of wearing braces I've read on this site make me think twice too. Will it really make a big difference in my life to finally have straight teeth? Can anyone help me through this dilemma?
You sound like me! I got to the point where my front tooth moved so much I could only wear "permanent" lipstick because if I smiled it would be all over that tooth. So I felt sort of foolish and selfish because THAT was the trigger that finally pushed me over the edge.

The thing is, as my ortho told me, your teeth continue to move. I am 51 and my mom is 75. HER teeth are starting to space OUT ... she would do Invisalign if she could, not for cosmetics but because now she gets stuff caught in them. So really, I was at risk of bone loss etc if I didn't do something.

You'll be 62 when the come off and have a gorgeous smile that will last you another 20 years.

I was agonizing over it myself and was watching the news one night and did a double-take as I saw our county executive being interviewed - with full metal mouth! At least on the uppers! I figured if a guy in the public eye like that could do it at his age, why not me?

braces at 60

Bizrul, thanks so much for your reply. And thanks to others who have posted about getting braces at an older age than the norm. I am feeling a little more positive about them--one week from today. I like what you and others have said about keeping the end result in mind-- a beautiful smile! :D
I am so glad to have found this forum!
