brackets are constantly coming loose

#1 Post by angie »

My dentist originally estimated that I would have lingual braces for a little over a year. It's been a little over a year and I have seen no improvement. I'm not exaggerating. The majority of my visits have been to reapply loose brackets. I'm told by his assistant that his other patients don't have this problem. That it's the food that I eat. I'm also told by other lingual braces wearers that having lingual braces should not confine me to a soft food or liquid diet. I eat some crunchy foods, but I have had brackets come loose while munching on French toast. What could be the problem and what are solutions?

Wow, sounds like you really have an issue there. I ate a fair few crunchy foods and apart from one incident, had no problems with brackets coming loose.

Could the problem be the type of glue your ortho uses? I know that after I had one bracket come loose (not an eating related issue) my ortho tried another glue and after that it was OK.

And absolutely lingual braces should not confine you to a soft food diet.

Sorry to hear about your bad experience- I have had upper linguals for about three weeks now and one bracket has come off.
I also have lower ceramics, three days after they were fitted the back bracket came loose. then 3 weeks later another bracket came loose.
I did go back but as it was an emergency my ortho just made it comfortable for me and said she will wait for my proper appointment in three weeks to fix them properly. All I have eaten since I had the brace fitted is soft foods and water........so its not the food.... however I do have an electric tooth brush!
I hope this is not the start of a common problem......
Age 28- Upper lingual- Lower Ceramic Braces
Fitted 27th May 08

i had a bad experience in the initial stages of my treatment with brackets falling off. My ortho said it was due to the glue he was using, but I have had almost one bracket or more fall off during every adjustment period. They have all been on the back teeth so it hasn't really impacted on my treatment at all. Just hang in there and ask your ortho if there are any other glues or what can be done

Hi - I had brackets coming off too but have to admit, it was my food choices.. agree with the other posts, see if your ortho can use a different glue.. It takes about an hour every time I had to have a bracket put back on so I have learned my lesson.. The last time a bracket came off (popcorn), I asked my ortho if we needed it.. it was in the back and it was the 3rd time it came off.. he took a look and said we didn't need it so thank goodness, I didn't have to have it put back on.. good luck!

Everyone is different so I'll tell you my experience and then hope the best for you.

I lost a couple of brackets originally but the re-glues stayed on better. I think it was the way the originals were applied (all at once with a tray) but I am not an expert. I have to admit that the ones that came off were because I was eating things I shouldn't have been (pistachios, popcorn) and for some reason chewy granola type bars yanked those suckers right off there. After I quit that stuff...no problem and I do eat a lot of stuff that I still shouldn't.

I'm sorry you haven't any improvement. That REALLY surprises me. I'm almost at the end of my time and I saw a LOT of movement in the first couple of months so I hope you see improvement soon. Does your ortho have anything to say about this?

Good luck to you!
