anesthesia

I am suppose to have surgery soon and cant wait but i always get afraid that i wont wake up from the surgery with anesthesia. has anyone ever felt that way before or is it just me?

I thought about this so much that I went on line and looked up the odds of certain events happening. When I found out dying in car accidents was so much more likely I felt better. After all, we do drive a lot and don't give it the worry we do about anesthesia. I think the odds of not waking up were something like 1 in 50,000 and for some reason better chance in Canada. Also, I found the topic very interesting-- the probabilities of this or that happening-- that it distracted me from my original fear.

I have had many surgeries throughout my life and as I've gotten older, I worry more each time about if I'll wake up afterwards (maybe because I have a family now and mroe important for me to wake up if you see what I mean). But out of all the surgeries I've had I've always woken up afterwards and never woken up during (I once watched a programme about people who woke up during surgery...was TOTALLY the wrong programme to watch!)
I always tell the anaesthetist to make sure I wake up as I'm going under and I'm always told don't worry you will They've never been wrong!

Like the others have said it is highly unlikely for it to happen.
They take good care of you while you are asleep

I guess this is one thing we all think but dont want to think about it.As we get older i think we are more worried about leaving our kids or fellas ..
You just have to remember these cases are rare and the odds are on that you will not wake up in the middle of surgery and that you will wake up when your meant too...
Its a natural fear.. but as meryaten rightly said if you didnt wake up you wouldnt know!!!!!

I work in the medical field. Early in my career I watched several surgeries and I was told by nurses/docs that drug users and smokers have a higher chance of waking up during surgery and usually had a rough time coming out in recovery room.

Out of all my worries this was not even on my mind i was pretty worried about not regaining all of my feeling even though my surgeon told me that theres only a 10% chance of happening. For my experience i acutally woke up during the end stages of the surgery but i quickly went back to sleep.

I was actually more worried about waking up too early than not waking up at all. My thoughts were exactly like meryatens, should the very unlikely worst happen you'd never know anything about it.
