Wisdom teeth?!

#1 Post by janessa »

I just got braces (see ticker) and will have to have my wisdom teeth out sometime in braces. I think when is up to me, my ortho didn't seem concerned that it needed to be done at a certain point during treatment. I have never had them out because they were never an issue, but I am braced because of overcrowding so I guess they have to come out! I just wanted to know if anyone has had braces when they got theirs out? I am a bit scared of anesthesia (I have had it before when I was 11 for a major back surgery) but I have heard the horror stories of being awake for the surgery, like hearing them crack your teeth into pieces to get them out and stuff. I will speak with my ortho about this of course when I see him in Sept and probably get a referral to the oral surgeon in his bldg for a consultation, I am hoping to have them out around xmas. Thanks!

I was kind of scared of anesthesia too, but it wasn't all that bad. If you're talking about people waking up by accident and getting paralyzed and stuff (a la Hollywood horror movies), I don't think you have to worry about that :P. I think most of those horror stories you hear are probably from people who were put under local anesthetic rather than general anesthetic. I have heard of people having it both ways, I think it might just be up to the preference of whoever is performing the procedure. I would definitely ask which you will be getting, just to make sure. I know I never would have done it unless I'd been put under general anesthetic!!!!

I have braces on and had my wisdom teeth taken out. In the beginning when i was first told that I'd be getting my wisdom teeth taken out with braces, i wasn't exactly sure how that worked, but it ended up working just fine.
I had what is called iv sedation (kinda like general anesthetic except your semi conscious but they give you meds before so you really don't know what happened during the surgery and right after). So no worries, you won't hear the cracking or grinding of the teeth, I was apparently singing druing one point of my surgery. Iv sedation isn't that bad. I was super worried going into the surgery bu they gave me vallium to help me calm down. If you have any more questions feel free to ask!

Ive had all four of mine taken out whilst in braces, 3 that were impacted were removed under general at the same time as my jaw surgery and the 4th by local anesethic. It wasnt aweful, and i chose not to have a general for the 4th one. Your be fine, a lot of the stories you hear are just exagerrated horror stories.
