Bulking up??

#1 Post by kaycee »

I was advised by my surgeon to gain a few pounds before surgery so that my weight wouldn't fall too low after. Since, I'm not on the thin side, just average weight, I'm just wondering how much weight people lost after surgery.

All in all I lost about 15 pounds, but I think the average is 5-10. I was never told to gain any weight before the surgery, but I was quite overweight to begin with so I was pretty pleased with the results 8).

I lost 23 lbs total, and I was a slim guy before the surgery. My weight gradually increased as soon as they pulled the splint out, even more so once I was allowed to eat real food again.

My weight loss looked like:

Day of surgery - 170 lbs.
1 week post op - 153 lbs.
2 weeks post op - 147 lbs. (splint removed)
3 weeks post op - 152 lbs.
1 month post op - 158 lbs. (started eating real food again)
2 months post op - 160 lbs.
4 months post op - 175 lbs.

bulking up

Actually I am preping for July 17th surgery and my ortho told me to start eating lots now. I'm "overweight" however, alot of that is muscle. I work out 3-4 times a week with a trainer doing both cardio and weights. So my fat content is lower than my weight would indicate. I'm 5'1" and weigh 138, size 8. My surgeon says I'll lose about 15-20 lbs total.

Somehow, I just don't see this as a huge problem!

I was also told to bulk up a bit (and enjoy eating while I could, because "it'd be months before I could eat a cheeseburger again"), but my appetite deserted me in the week before surgery and I just didn't feel lke eating.
I lost 12lbs over 2 weeks after the op, but gradually put it all back on again over the following 6 months. Shame, it was nice being a size 8 for a while!

I was also told that i would lose 10-15 lbs. but after my surgery i didn't end up losing much i think around 2-3 lbs. I guess its because i ate 5-6 meals of oatmeal and congee a day.

I received no instructions to bulk up, but the few days before surgery I really ate whatever I want. I ended up losing about 15lbs, mostly in the first two weeks (bringing me from a normal weight to nearly underweight). Four and a half months post surgery and three and a half months after being unwired, I have finally gained the weight back :(

Thanks everyone. My doctor wanted me to gain 10-15 pounds, I've gained about 8 and that's probably all I'm going to gain. It's easy gaining the weight, but if it doesn't come off during the no chew phase, I'll have an awfully hard time getting rid of it after.

I concur, KC. Post-op weight loss has all the implications of a crash diet in so far as losing weight this fast is not the way to keep it off long term. Like most 'crash diets', weight is gained back in a fairly short time.

I know you will eat high nutrition foods and be sure to get your daily intake of calories---that is what's important---the weight will most likely come back whether you lose 2 or 20 lbs post op. I was told to bulk up, too, and I really don't think it was necessary as I was able to eat pretty well within a day or two.

Bulking up

#10 Post by amd »

I actually am just eating whatever I want - mostly things I know that I'll be restricted from post-op.

I go to a gym regularly (weights and cardio 4 x/week) and have plans on returning as soon as I can post op. My trainer is actually coming to my home just to help me start the walking around stage etc. I'm not doing it because I'm a health freak or anything, I just want to assist the healing process as much as I can and I want to keep the 10-15lbs I lose off!

Is it the norm to lose 10-15lbs? I am 5'8 and 118lbs; if I lose 15lbs I'm going to look emaciated! My ortho said I should put on 10lbs or so, but I haven't had my weight budge since I was 16 or so (almost 8 years) so its been a bit of a challenge. With my surgery still almost 3 months away I've given up on gaining for now.

I lost about 18lb in the 5 days I was in hospital as the food was dire. Looked rather skinny at 38kg but soon put it back on when I got home to my home made soups.

I weighed around 146 before surgery. I was never told to bulk up but I did try to eat whatever I wanted before. I remember going to town on a bag of chips 3 days before surgery LOL. I lost 6 pounds after 5 days. Not sure where I am at now. I don't think I am at 135 or even 130. My dr said expect to lose 10-15 pounds but it will all depend on how fit you are prior to surgery. If you are fit, you will lose less and if you are a bit over weight, you will tend to lose more.

I lost 7 lbs in the first week and then another 9 lbs in the second week. I last checked my weight last week and it's down a total of 16lbs. I can't say I'm complaining though.

I lost about 8 pounds in total (mostly during the 3 days in hospital) but now im back to the same weight as pre op. I was actually surprised that i didnt loose more, but think that my daily starbucks hot chocolate during recovery properly didnt help!
