Wire or bracket sticking into my tongue-help!

#1 Post by Noellenoelle »

I have a wire or bracket sticking into my tongue all the way in the back on the left side. When I called the ortho he said it was because my teeth had moved, so I am going in tomorrow to get it snipped off. Did this happen to anyone else? And every time the teeth move, is this going to happen?? I am so uncomfortable and I cut my tongue so bad it was bleeding and now there is a big sore on it :yuck: What else besides wax can I put on the brackets and wire, since it keeps breaking through???

Yeah, it happened to me, mostly within 24 hours of an adjustment. Sugar free gum sounds good.

It happened to me during the initial 4-6 months of treatment. Wax and Orajel were my best friends.....

Hi Saps-Well...I went to my ortho and he was on vacation, so the emergency dentist drilled down the bracket a little, but it still is really bothering me..I have a huge canker sore now from it, and if I don't have wax on it, it just kills!! Is your wire on the top or bottom? Mine is the lower left bottom-did you get it fixed yet? I hope you can before the long Labor Day week-end
I must say, I have only had these on for 5 weeks and if this is what I am in for, I really don't know if I can take it! I have been so depressed and the thought of getting the top ones on, I can't even comprehend....

Noellenoelle,
I was able to get mine fixed but, like you, I know have to wait for the sore to heal. I was very much like you during the first weeks. I was depressed, didn't think I'd be able to put up with them, and kicking myself for making a "bad decision". For me, and I believe most people, it did get better and the time went by. I hope when you see your ortho, he's able to make it better for you. One thing that helped me is after every adjustment before I got out of the chair I ran my tongue over everything and if there was something in the least bit pokey asked them to do something about it. As you've noticed something a little pokey can cause a sore on the tongue and then it seems VERY pokey.

Good luck!!!

Isn't gum and linguals a bad idea? Sure that was on the list of "no-no"s my ortho gave me??

I've only just had uppers put on, and nothing's moved yet, so don't think i need to worry about bits of wire poking through, but if that did happen, i think i'd be popping round to get it removed straight away. When i had braces when i was 14, i think i remember bits of wire poking into the side of my mouth at certain points and it being extremely uncomfortable, but i didn't think to do anything about it, and just suffered in (relative) silence. For the amount i'm paying this time, i won't be so shy in asking to have any pokey wires trimmed pronto!
