I surprised even myself.

Hi I am 59 years old and always wanted straighter teeth so here I am. I have a question. My ortho said I have 13 tray upper and lower. He said then they take impressions again. Does that mean i have to wait 6 weeks again and get more new trays? I have only had these in 4 days, but I haven't had any problems. NOT MUCH DISCOMFORT AT ALL. iS THIS MORMAL? Any advice from anyone is greatly appreciated. Thankyou, Jean

He's referring to getting refinements after you're done with the original 13 trays. They takes impressions again just like at the beginning and then make more trays. This is because in a lot of cases the teeth are still a little off from what was projected or the patient wants to make more changes to get the teeth perfect. So, yes, you will have to wait several more weeks after that if you need/want refinements. You may not need them. It sounds like in your ortho's experience his patients usually need refinements, so that's why he's telling you ahead of time so you're not surprised.

A lot of times the first set of aligners don't hurt. Sometimes the second set hurts more, at least for the first few days. I've never needed to take painkillers during my treatment. Mine only hurt taking them off for the first few days of a new set. (I'm on 26 of 28.) So I would say you are in the normal range.

Goodl uck the rest of the way! :)

I'm only up to tray 3, but not too much discomfort so far. I've taken painkillers maybe once or twice, but realistically could have managed without them. :)
Initial set: 31 upper / 17 lower
1st refinement: 14 upper / 10 lower
2nd refinement: 10 upper / 5 lower

Iwas pretty sure I would need more than 13 trays so thanks for telling me what to expect. At my age I am not a perfectionist, I just want them better than what they were. I guess I will just wait and see about the pain, but I sure don't think they are bad yet. Thanks for the info. Jean
