Invisalign Here I Come!
Moderator: bbsadmin
I'm only on tray 3/25, but i believe i am already noticing some teeth moving more distant to each other. It's not a big deal, and i know these gaps close as teeth are pulled back in to alignment. The teeth are already over crowded so the gaps are trivial compared to the angle of the tooth anyway.
I have some moderate (i think severe) overcrowding, upper and lower. I only need very mild IRP despite my teeth being quite rotated in places.
I'd like to get my teeth whitened after i've done, but only with over the counter stuff. I dont see the point in paying £500 when you can get the same active ingredient over the counter at boots. Sure, the dentists can use stronger stuff, but i'm not looknig for hollywood white either. My teeth aren't really stained or yellow, just need a little zing up. I was also planning on trying some Opal Essence? toothpaste first, as it comes recommended by cosmetic dentists as something that works and doesn't harm teeth like cheap whitening toothpaste.

Wobblydeb: Ohh I see, I think I'll end up having to get the same.. because my upper and lower teeth arnt quite aligned at the front, the two front bottom teeth arnt in the same place as the front top teeth.. which kinda sucks.. what do you think the process will be for me? im freaking out now lol I guess ill be able to see in my Clincheck.
Because when you say gaps, I think of gaps people can really notice? Such as are the gaps big enough to see right through? Enough for people to say or think 'what the hell that gap wasnt there before'.. Im sorry about all these questions, I feel so annoying im embarrassed, I just like to know exactly what im getting into lol but im a very paranoid person as you can tell!
PaulInc: Woww so you've only had invisalign for a while then! You seemed so confident I thought you'd be half way through - I hope im as strong as you are through my treatment. When you say your teeth are moving more distant from eachother, is it like WOW a gap where you can see right through both your teeth? (when it were closed before)
And I dont think I have much crowding, all my teeth are aligned apart from my six front ones. They've never really have been, even since primary school, which was obviously a long long time ago. And I believe back then, my Lateral Incisor used to be pointing inwards, now its poking out. However, in the last few years they've got worse - maybe because my wisdom teeth are coming through? but my two front teeth have sort of turned inwards, and one of my Canines is sticking out also. So as you can imagine I have quite an awkward looking smile, I just hope it can be fixed, without getting worse
I also would LOVE to get my teeth whitened after my treatment! Im really looking forward to that, showing off my smile! Im not sure as to whether ill ask the dentist to whiten my teeth or buy a product over the counter, I guess it depends how pleased I am with them. My teeth are already pretty white because iv used teeth whitening products before - and I dont smoke, but still, I'd like them a few shades whiter just to brighten them up
Whats both of your views on IPR? Were you really nervous when you went to get it? And what appointment did you get that on? Im going to get my moulds done sometime during next week.. apparently when you have to bite down on the mould, you have to leave it in for 5 minutes? 5minutes with your mouth open? LOL? Thanks again both of you

Yep, but i knew everything going in. I spent a long time reading and watching (youtube) other peoples experiences before i even went for a consultation. I even spoke with cosmetic dentists online. I haven't been worried at any point because i knew exactly what to expect and i've mentally prepared for every/most eventuality. Attachments, IPR, attachments coming off, aligners cracking, aligner removal difficulty, any pain, lisping, refinements, tons of brushing, diet, sharp edges, chapped lips, sore throats, etc. I even had aligner hooks and dental wax before i got the aligners in anticipation of problems.
With the best intention in the world, your dentist/ortho cannot inform you of all the nuances of every treatment. If you dont do your homework, you're in for surprises.
The only time i am nervous is in the waiting room, and that's because i hate waiting rooms :S

Ahh I see! Thats an idea then, I mean ive seen some peoples videos on youtube of their treatment, the process of it and how they feel, im gunna see if theres any videos of people getting IPR done haha! I cant really imagine what it'll be like.. I would have thought someone sawing into your teeth would be painfull though! And frightening incase they make a huge mistake!
I have also read alot on these message boards, pages and pages, but sometimes I still have questions and I dwell on those too much, but thanks to you and some others you have definatly put my mind at ease, im feeling a lot better about the whole situation.
Its going to be a good six weeks till I actually recieve my aligners (ive only had the consultation, baisically step one) And I hate waiting rooms too, I always feel sick before I go see the dentist because of my stupid nerves. But when I went into the room straight away she was like HELLO THERE! shes so friendly (thankfully) and I felt a lot better after the consultation, so after my Clincheck I may feel even better, knowing what my treatment plan will be.
Would you mind keeping me updated PaulInc on your treatment, let me know how things are going? Obviously im not expecting you to reply straight away to my messages (although you have been today, thats very kind of you) its just a sigh of relief knowing that someones there to help, and who is going through the same thing. My family support me with it, but if I had problems they'd just say 'ah dont be silly' and wouldnt really listen, it isnt very comforting.

I've only seen one IPR video posted on youtube recently, but it was a spinning disk tool, not the metal strip. Frankly, i'd rather have the strip as it seems much more precise. They cant just make a big "whoops" with the metal strip as it's a very very fine strip. You might want to ask about that.
Sure thing. You might also want to check some video blogs.

Anyway, they both have quite mild cases (compared to me at least), but their videos and blogs were extremely helpful.
I'd like to thank them while i am here, if they read this, lol.

I just watched those videos! Thank you for posting them they are soo helpful, its great when people go out of their way to help others like that, because we only hear it from Invisaligns point of view or the orthos, but hearing it from the patients point of view - theres always a lot more to it!
Sharons lucky she only had one tooth out of place, her finished result was great, such a movie-star smile! and so has Devushka(?) I hope my treatment goes just as well as theirs lol! Its great to see progress like that.
Its annoying because I was wanting to get a brace last year.. went to one dentist and he said he'd need to remove teeth so I left it.. year later I went to another dentist (few months ago, for lingual braces) she said I needed teeth taken out too, it competely destoryed any hope I had correcting my teeth - then thats when I found Invisalign, I didnt have very high hopes as I thought 3rd time to the dentist - she will say I need extractions also. But she gave me a choice which was great! Whats your teeth like anyway? Seen any changes so far? When you went out in public for the first time with them in how did you feel? And with attachments for the first time?

My teeth are quite crooked/rotated at the top central and my bottom centrals are pushed back and need pushing forwards. Bit of rotation on my premolars and lower K9.
To be honest, i wasn't self conscious at all, but perhaps in the first week i was "aware" of them. I am certain no one even notices while doing day to day stuff like shopping. Perhaps if you're sat chatting to someone face 2 face, they are paying close attention, are within 2 ft distance, they may notice "something".
You wont be thinking about them, no one else is thinking about your teeth, so the thought someone might notice something isn't even in your head. You'll probably end up pointing them out to ppl and showing them off, which is what i did. My friend thought they were a cool idea, and said if they needed it they'd chose them over normal braces. Fun thing to do is pull them out and show them how detailed and thin they are. They'll be amazed.
I was given my aligners for 2 weeks without attachments to get used to them. They had the bubbles in them for where the attachments would be, but they were at the sides and on canines, so they're not visible unless you pull a huge grin. (Something you have to keep in mind when looking at pictures, people are deliberately peeling their lips over their heads to show you the aligners. You dont go around with your lips over your chin and nose.) Without attachments my aligners fit GREAT, but when i got the attachments they didnt fit as nice. The aligners felt springy as the attachments wouldnt let them sit as far down on the tooth as they did without, and i could see them a little more as a result. Luckily on the second aligner they fit much better and i was a lot happier.
I dont know much about traditional orthodontics, but it seems pulling teeth is the "weapon" of choice for many orthos.
Some pictures of my aligners after i just got them, and one with them on from just yesterday. I apologise for the unshaven chocolate covered mouth

The ridges are on the inside, the outside is smooth. You cannot see the ridges when they're on your teeth.

Yeaah I understand exactly what you mean about being 'aware' they are there, but not exactly self concious. Because they dont exactly stand out from a distance or anything - they are see through haha. And the people il be chatting with face to face with, il have probably told anyway! Your right!
Ahh thats good then, at least you were given your aligners for a few weeks without attachments, instead of them throwing you into it all at once. I was just about to ask you about your attachments because I didnt see them in the photo the first time round, but I remember you telling me you had them, so I had to have a second look! Thing is, when people take pictures of their aligners, the attachments look big (obviously, because its really close up) iv never seen attachments from a full-face view, or a bit further away. I was wondering, when you had the time, if you can take one - obviously you can scribble/block out your face of whatever for 'safety reasons' or if you have found a picture of somebody else? Its just I can never get a picture when its not RIGHT up close to the teeth (my ortho showed me the attachments on the teeth models, they looked SO small, I dont think they will be when I have them on though..) thats something iv always wondered! Thanks for uploading those pictures though, and the man peeking out is so funny! XD
When you have attachments, and your getting the aligners off, does it honestly feel like your teeth are going to come out? Because I remember someone saying that I was like... oh dear. haha! And iv always wondered.. obviously they have to get the attachments onto your teeth in the exact spot where the 'bubble' is in the aligners.. how do they do it?! Thank you! and Thank You too Lilypad
PS your teeth dont actually look that bad! they are sortof like mine, but mine are crooked in different directions haha I cant explain. And is it just the front few teeth that are crooked? I thought I was only doing the top but im paying for bottom too so I might as well have them done.. how much did you pay for yours PaulInc and Lilypad?

the aligners come with a template that has the holes in it. The ortho put this on my teeth and then the tech applied the attachments. The only bad part was when they blew air on the specific teeth to dry them well. I have unusually sensitive teeth so that wasnt good. Mine were $3900 and I only did the top. That included a bonded retainer and 2 sets of essix retainers. One more payment and they are REALLY mine LOL I'm really a weinie when it comes to having dental work done, and I really thought it wasnt as bad as I had imagined. It's all so worth it to have a great smile now.

Ohhh I see! I've always wondered haha! And yeah I heard about the cold air part, I think someone else mentioned it being really painful, it might have been you on another topic, can you explain what its like? I dont think my teeth are THAT sensitive, like I can bite into icecream and I wont get that horrible pain (which iv have a few times when I was younger) but then, when the ortho was cleaning my teeth (method to prevent gum disease, cant remember what its called) I dont know whether it was with a small sanding tool or what not, but it was really uncomfortable. It was a bit painful, but I dont know whether I was making it out to be more than it was - I didnt really understand what they were doing, sawing my teeth or brushing them extra fast?! I can imagine IPR being really painful, and also when they blow the cold air onto the attachments - how long do they do that for?! im such a baby.
0Im paying £4000 for mine, I think its another £100 for retainers, its soo expensive, but as you say it'll be worth it - at least I hope it will. I dont have a job at the moment (the pressure is on) so my parents have to pay for it, I'll owe them around £4000, thats so not good. Lilypad do you have any pictures of your teeth before and after? or just after? Id love to see the result I find it really interesting!

Hi,
IPR doesnt hurt at all, i promise. Even i get a brain freeze biting on ice cream, but the air they used to dry my tooth was no feeling at all. You'd have to have exceptionally sensitive teeth to be hurt by this. They use a little UV light to "cure" the attachments. Pain from treatment is a big 0, and a whopping 1 from sensitive teeth. Pain should not be a concern with Invisalign.
I've not had any teeth feel like they're being pulled out with attachments on, but i suppose that might be because none of those teeth have undergone enough movement to be loose. There is one of my lower front teeth that's getting pushed forwards quite quickly, and the first few days after i switch to a new aligner it can be a bit sensitive.
Attachments come in 4 shapes as far as i know. Those like in my pic, the vertical ones, the same shape only horizontal and square ones of similar width. There are the small round ones, but i dont think they use those anymore as the other shapes were developed to give better movement.
It's not the size of the attachments that makes them visible. Even if they were very small, or a different shape, they'd still be noticeable as a small bump on the tooth. Unless they're on your 4 front teeth, no one is going to see them unless you want them to. i.e You pull a huge grin. Go to the mirror and talk to yourself, you will see which teeth you expose, and for how many fractions of a second.
The reason people probably dont take too many pics of their attachments full face is because you have to pull a stupid face to show them right. Take a look at devushkas site, i think she might have some full face pics (lacking the stupid, and lots of pretty instead!). Also, you can just stand further away from the monitor until it's far enough away to simulate a mouth size.
Mine cost £3,200 for everything, flat fee. They pay the same amount for doing uppers or lowers, so it makes sense to do both arches if you do invisalign. The price is flat, so if it takes them 12 months or 24 months i dont think it costs them more money to Invisalign. What they may charge more for is the location, their skill and length of treatment. My dentist is a cosmetic dentist in Manchester (50 miles from where i live) and does 80+ Invisalign cases a year, so they've got plenty of experience. They also offer just about every other orthodontic appliance and tooth "treatment", which is why i chose them. If something goes wrong, i am certain they can fix it with the vast array of skills and experience they have. I feel confident in my dentist, and that's saying quite a lot as my bar for respect in professional fields is quite high. I know too many idiots in "intellectual" jobs to just trust any old yahoo. My actual Invisalign dentist is quite young, younger than me, but i think i prefer it. I know he is up to speed with the latest technologies and training. The dental practice is also quite new with latest gizmos and such. The only negative thing i can say is the location isn't great, and it makes me sick having to walk past their Porsches and Ferraris every time i go back!

Hey PaulInc sorry I couldnt reply sooner, had a busy weekend, I was actually telling all my friends about Invisalign when I was out! Turns out most of them have had braces before, and they thought it was great that I was getting them. One of my friends actually have recently got traintracks, which made me feel relieved knowing that I wasnt on my own. I felt really confident in myself for once, so at least now when I get them, I can just go up and say LOOK I have themm! instead of trying to hide, I cant wait! in fact iv heard some people say they think their teeth look better WITH Invisalign on!
And thank you for reassuring me that IPR wont hurt as much as I thought it would, im such a baby when it comes to things like that, I always need someone to put me in my place lol! Im pleased to see that the attachments arnt as obvious as I thought they were, like obviously if people are really close they might notice something, but as we've said before, its less noticable than metal brackets, and thats what we're paying for. I have my appointment on the 28th for moulds, I just want to get all those appointments over with, so I can get my Invisalign, I'll feel better when i've got them knowing that from that day onwards im one step closer to having beautiful teeth
Woww you got a good deal there £3,200 thats great, I honestly cant believe im paying so much, but its worth it, because obviously its something i'll have for the rest of my life, I know I wont regret it. My ortho is also young but you can tell shes really interested in her job, and cares a lot about her patients, she didnt force any options upon me, she asked exactly what I wanted, obviously giving me some of her input also, I feel really comfortable when im at the dentist and thats something that iv never felt before! Normally I feel quite intimidated, but she was so friendly. and LOL yes I can imagine their gorgeous expensive cars!
When they take pictures of your teeth, and show you the Clincheck, there isnt any chance of having a copy is there? I saw that Devushka had her Clincheck on her block and pictures of her teeth? Argh im so exited, if theres any news or information you'd like to tell me feel free! Catch up whenever you can PaulInc its nice to swap experiances, and to know theres someone else going through the same treatment, Thanks!

I asked the same question about getting a copy of my clincheck and got a great response on this thread viewtopic.php?t=27007&highlight=
As for IPR, I think it is like getting your nails filed. Its a bit irritating, but it certainly didn't hurt at all. I just got my teeth cleaned recently, and that made me jump where the IPR never did.
