Surgery in the UK.

Hey everyone,

I noticed there are some people here who have had or are going to have surgery based in the UK.

Does anyone have any idea how much it would cost, if not done on the NHS.

I have been told I can not have this done on the NHS as I am over 18.

I have a class 3 malocclusion.

My dentist really didn't seem to have a clue what she was talking about, she told me there was no such thing as upper jaw surgery. My doctor didn't seem too clued up on the subject either.

My dentist offered me to have a chat with an orthodontist which I am going to go ahead with. However just for a consultation it would cost Â£120.

For me it is mainly cosmetic, however I do have a slight lisp which i feel is due to my underbite. I feel my front teeth get in the way of my tongue. Do you think this would help with NHS funding?

Hi Gavin,

I'm in a similar situation to you. I have class III mal and have always had a lisp, now i'm about to embark on the long journey to surgery (braces go on next month) to correct the underbite, bring in my chin and get rid of the lisp. I would advise you to forget the dentist and doctor and go straight to an orthodontist or, preferably, maxillofacial surgeon, as this is a specialist area and needs people specifically trained in lower facial deformities. They are the ones who will give you the best advice.

You should try as hard as poss to get NHS funding. I'm having to pay for it all myself and it is VVV expensive.

PS- i'm in London so it may be cheaper if you are in a different city.

Hi descantus,

Could you please give me a rough idea of how much it would cost privately?

I've searched the internet all over and the prices vary hugely.

hey do u have pics ? i live in the uk and didnt realise i had such a problem (overbite) until when i went to the orthodontist they gave me a few options and one of them was to refer me to the hopstal for jaw surgery if i wanted the bet result as i was unhappy with my profile too.

you can self refer yourself too but if i was u i would just pay the 120 to get all your options. Otherwise call the local hopital and speak to the orthodontics section to see how you can get an appointment

Hi,

I'm paying for private orthodontics and my insurance covered private surgery. However, for various reasons, the surgery was actually carried out in an NHS hospital.

I believe if your case is severe enough you should be able to get treatment on the NHS. You just might have to wait a while.

depends where you are in the uk to how long you wait, i went on the waiting list to have my wisdom teeth out and two weeks later received an appointment then i was booked straight in for braces so i havent waited long at all.

Also there is another younge lady who has treatment in the same hospital as me she didnt have to wait long either, she started treatment at the same time as me and is havign surgery in JAN !! she sped through hers because she didnt need extractions so really she hasnt even had to wait long for surgery either and they have pre booked her in.

Hey i had all my ortho work and surgery on the NHS. I was quoted Â£11,000 for braces and jaw surgery privately (and this was properly 5 years ago now

, which i just couldnt afford.)

Unlike Kerry, tho my wait was over 2 and half years, from my intial consult with the ortho to actually getting the braces on my teeth (which is why i looked into going private.)

From what ive read on here, the waiting times and acceptance rates vary hugely from healthtrust to healthtrust.

If you not happy with your dentists decsion then id ask for a 2nd opinion from another dentist.

Hi there,

I haven't posted for ages so I'm amazed I remembered my log-in details!

Anyway, I was eligible for NHS treatment despite being over 18 so do push for more information. As it happened I wasn't prepared to wait 3 years for NHS treatment so I had mine done privately. I paid #2500 (sorry my pound sign isn't working!) for upper and lower metal braces and #9300 for upper and lower jaw surgey and a genioplasty. I had a class II mallocclusion.

Ps. Without being rude to your dentist, most dentists are not skilled in this area (no such thing as upper jaw surgery indeed!), you'll need to see an orthodontist and an oral-maxillofacial surgeon to get a true idea of the picture.
