Will Lingual Braces Affect my SINGING???

#1 Post by Rarry »

Hi, I am a 24 year old male singer songwriter. I play in a band and singing is my life. I've had crowding in my upper teeth since i was a child due to a narrow jaw. I plan on going to get a consultation ( can anyone recommend a good lingual braces Ortho in Los angeles?) as soon as I can. Can anyone tell me from experience wether or not lingual braces will affect my singing? I know it will affect my speech at first but as i get used to it should I be back to singing normaly? thanks

I'd say no to linguals if you make a career out of singing. I have had my IBraces (lingual) on for a few months, and while I've really adjusted to speaking with them, I still have a slight lisp and slur with certain words. Especially when using the letter s or th sounds.

It's find for everyday speaking and no one seems to notice... but when singing is your career and you are constantly training your voice for certain articulations, I don't know if linguals would be your best option.

However, this is just my opinion... and haha for all I know I may be the only one with a lisp still !! AHH

I'm not a singer and my experience was with upper linguals only. I'd say you'd probably be OK, the only sound you might have to work on is the "s" sound. Staying well hydrated will also help.

Don't Do it!

#6 Post by markymark38115 »

I too enjoy singing and do some singing in Philly at various venues. I am having to get the lingual braces off of my lower teeth because it has affected my speech so badly that my singing sounds terrible! I have crowding in my lower teeth and had linguals put on last October. But, my tongue has no where to rest now. So, my Orthodontist agreed that it was a bad choice for me and is keeping the linguals on the top and changing to ceramic braces on the bottom. I can't WAIT to get these things off my lower teeth. So, if your passion is singing DON"T do linguals. Go for ceramic front braces if you are going for aesthetics. You hardly notice them.

well, they haven't affected my singing, I have upper linguals (incognito)
mostly during talking or singing I don't remember that I have them
sometimes a problem with the 's' sound happens but very rarely
I think that one can sing with upper linguals:)

wow its been a long time. I had to put off getting linguals due to financial issues and touring. I'm finally in a place were I can definitely get them now. I will be getting lingual braces on top and exterior braces on the bottom. My bottom teeth don't even show. I can see how bottom linguals could affect your speech/singing. Besides the "th" or "S" problem with upper linguals, which i hear can be over come with practice I dont really see this affecting my singing. can I get some more feedback thanks.
