Long story short, I had braces 20years ago as a kid, done by a regular dentist, not an orthodontist. Job was good looking, but it was not stable. about 10 years later my teeth were crooked again. The dentist who did this was very bad and lost his license some time later... This probably didn't help.
It took me 10 years to manage enough courage and do this again. I had a friend who had braces a couple years ago. He also had to have surgery done to his jaw. He had complications and almost died during the operation! They said it never happens, but it did happen to a close friend of mine so this definately was something I had in mind.
Anyway, I met with 3 different orthodontists. All wanted to do surgery. However, one of them did a computer simulation and offered a solution, they would remove a front incisive on the bottom and this way would not need a surgery. Met the surgeon and he agreed with the ortho that this would be his choice too because the surgery would have been to move my jaw only 3mm wich is very tough to do perfectly (according to him). Plus I wouldn't have to deal with any side effects or complications. He recommended the incisive extraction.
So yesterday I got braces again. I hate that! There is no word to describe it! I can't believe I'm dealing with this all over again.
They had to put cement to prevent me from biting one of the casing off. This is annoying, even more than the braces themselves. The braces don't hurt the teeth, but it pricks my cheeks, I use wax but still...
Anyway, anyone had one incisive removed? I'm glad to avoid surgery, but concerned it might look weird...
Got braces for the second time yesterday... (long)

I know people who have been killed in an automobile accident. It doesn't stop me from getting in a car.
Perception and attitude is everything - and getting braces is no different.
You've made a choice. Embrace it. Stop stressing and focus on the eventual outcome - which is a better smile than you have today.

Hang in there, I have found that a HUGE amount of people on this site are going for Round 2 (me included). I understand your concerns and frustration and I'm sorry to hear about the horrible time your friend went through but try to not let that stop you from getting what you want and deserve.... perfect teeth!
The time will fly, I'm at 5 months today and it really has flown!
Good luck!

Neova,
Hang in there!!! There are some folks on "Round 3". I just started my third treatment two weeks ago due to a recurrent problem. I understand your frustration, it is really a letdown to know you have to have things done over again. I think the good news is dentists have learned a lot in the last 20 years to keep teeth where they belong after treatment.
I also had braces 20 years ago as an adult and then 10 years before that as a teenager. While it was difficult to decide to make the commitment to go in for a third time, in my case it beats the alternative of dealing with bite problems the rest of my life, and possibly loosing teeth as a result.
Good luck to you - I think you will be very happy with your decision in the long run!

Neova, don't be discouraged. You will be amazed the number of us on this board who are on their second go round with braces. I had braces 30 years ago when I was fourteen. Didn't wear my retainer, pregnant 2 times and that is when my teeth really moved.
I am happy to say that I am on month 15 and things have been ok. Not nearly as bad as the first time. I haven't been on here for a long time, but when I first started the journey I was on these boards constantly. You will find help, support and guidance. It is so nice to be in the same boat with so many wonderful folks. If you would like to read my story it is Discomom Smile under construction. I need to post a new picture of my teeth! It has been so long. Take care, and enjoy the journey. Lori
