Double jaw surgery

So my doc thinks the end of feb I will be surgery ready. My questions is what is it like to have double jaw surgery?
I will be having my mandibul moved 7/8mm back and my max moved 3mm back. I will also be getting cheek implants (or else I would have a concave face) and maybe mu chin shaved off a lil bit.
As you can see I am feeling overwhelemd....

This is a pretty broad question. Do you have any more-specific questions people can address? You can gather experiences and stories from people all over this forum that describe what its like.

I just got sick over the past weekend and threw up everywhere! It was like a faucet.....now I am getting my jaw wired shut, and what do the docs do for nausia? (sp)
Also I have a two year old son who for some reason loves to sit on my head. But when he sits on my head I freak out and feel so claustrophobic! The thought of having my mouth wired shut and possible having my sinus all blocked makes me panic. How did you guys deal with this feeling?
Also from the time the doc said you are surgery ready how long did it take after that for your surgery? Like lets say your ortho saids your surgery ready tomorrow, how long would it take for you to get your O.S. date????

You will only be eating liquids with your jaw wired shut, so that's all that will be coming out of you if you throw up. The liquids pour out of the sides of your mouth and between your teeth even with them wired closed. Its unpleasant but is fine. You don't choke or suffocate like you imagine in your head. Then you rinse your mouth out with salt water and mouthwash.

and what do the docs do for nausia? (sp)

They give you drugs for nausia and for anxiety, etc. People still throw up sometimes (women more often then men for whatever reason), but as stated above, if you do throw up, its nothing to panic about.

I have this problem too. I had a small panic attack afterwards but they gave me a mild dose of anti-anxiety meds and I was fine afterwards. I was fine at home too after that. If you have sever worries about it, get yourself a prescrition of xanac from your doctor and dissolve it in water. Xanax is okay to take with the pain meds and you may feel better just knowing you have it even if you don't need to take it. You can take it before going into surgery too if you're scared but make sure you tell the surgical staff ahead of time that you're planning on taking some and remind them the morning of surgery that you took it.

It took 2-months to get a surgery date from the point that I was "surgery ready" due to the popularity of my surgeon and the high-demand of the hospital I chose.

Hey stranger! I figured I make my first post before I get booted. It looks like we're having our surgery at the same time - mine is scheduled for the 27th of Feb! That would be awesome to have someone doing this along with me.

And hello to everyone in this forum...I will definitely be participating as more and more as my surgery draws near.

Hi changes. Congrats on being so close to your surgery. I am currently 6 days out of double jaw surgery. I guess to sum it up in a VERY general description...it sux but it's definately survivable and very well worth it. I thought I was prepared after reading this forum for a year, but turns out you don't know quite what it's like till you experience it. I'm WAYYYY more tired that I thought I'd be. It's true that there's not much pain. I quit taking pain meds all together on day 3. The downside to that is the reason there is no pain is that everything is numb. I can't feel anything from my eyes down to my chin, my tongue being the only exception (thank goodness!). It's a very odd feeling. My days have mostly revolved around laying down and drinking as much water as possible (quite a challenge!). My poor belly is having a bit of a problem with my new diet, but it'll just have to get over it.

I know everyone's experience is different, but as I said it's totally survivable and worth it. It's a great feeling to know it's done and over and in a few months it'll be a memory and I'll have my great new face . So, don't worry too much, stay positive, and know there's tons of people here to help you along the way!

Thank you everyone! Your all have helped me so much. As my date gets closer and closer I get even more nervous. I talked to my Oral surgeon and he says once my Ortho says I'm surgery ready My O.S. will see me the very next day and get me into surgery a few days later. My surgeon is so excited to work on me. I'm such a complicaited case and he is excited!
