Braces @ 33?

#1 Post by arieswithbraces »

This is my first post but I'm guilty because I've been lurking for some time now! My long story shor..I was a long..very long time thumbsucker so I have the upper crowding, fangs (as my little brother calls them) and an open bite. I'm am EXTREMELY scared of the dentist, bad experiences as a child and teen. So now..5 or more  years later..a deep cleaning and 3 valium later...everyone here has inspired me to take the journey to straight teeth :D . I've had 4 consults, 3 said upper jaw surgery, 1 said expander (definitely not doing that!) and I went in today with the ortho I do like thinking we were doing..records..xrays...or whatever you do to work up to braces...BAM!!! They hit me with the SPACERS! :x I didn't even have lunch yet! Extractions and braces in the next 2 weeks! I'm excited, overwhelmed, nervous, and scared all at the same time! I'll post pics later since they pulled a funny move and put these spacers in...but I am glad this process has started and can't wait for 2 things..to bite lettuce and smile in a picture :D

Hi and welcome! You're on your way to straight teeth

Good luck on the extractions. I had 4 extractions in one day. I've always been scared of the dentist, but it went quite well. But you're on liquid/soft foods for 4-5 days. Get ready for soup, yoghurt and shakes

Keep us posted on how you're doing.

thank you for the welcome!!! You guys are great on this board I must say. I feel like the old woman trying to get her teeth straight when I should have sucked it up and done it when I was younger! My BF is great in a sense because he could care less if I get braced or not he says I'm beautiful, but in the back of my mind it's like "yeah, when I don't smile" ...it's a personal thing for me though. But on the other hand..has no sympathy what so ever for me taking drugs for dental appts and being this darn scared of this process! I have chalked it up to a man thing and will just bond with you guys for this part of my life..he doesn't get it.

Don't be hard on your bf :) Just be glad he supports you. You can always come venting here. I'm currently single, but I remember talking about it ALL the time with my ex, cause I wanted to do this for several years before I dared to do it. He was so tired of me talking about it all the time and never doing anything  After I dumped him I decided to get braces, he didn't dump me due to getting braces

Keep us posted :)

Hi there!!

I am 32 with braces so welcome fellow 30ish person!
This site is very very supportive, and its hard for your significant other to completely understand as there are so little adults with braces around thats its all a bit of a mystery to them.
Good Luck with your treatment. Keep us updated. xxxx
I am 32 years old, got my braces on 21st April, ceramic top and bottom with a lovely gold archwire!! I have metal brackets on the back teeth. I have has a right pre-molar removed to allow a wayard left canine to fit in its proper place.

And missymoo...you both are right...I'll keep that in mind concerning the BF. Last night I was thinking, this spacer thing really isn't as bad as I thought it would be..a little sore..more on the left. I did take Advil FAITHFULLY every 4 hours until I went to bed. I was ok until this morning..I was really sore and I accidentally bit all the way down :yikes: ! I work in a dialysis clinic so I'm usually up so I came in early took 2 Tylenol and half vicodin. Now back to the sore thing. My extractions got pushed back to June 18th..I don't think I can wait that long! My ortho said they will brace me next week if I want..I don't think I want to have to deal with that pain plus getting used to braces..what do you all think? Brace before extractions or after?

HI! Welcome! I had a lower incisor extracted, a week later I had 2 upper pre-molars (bicuspids) extracted and 3 days later had top and bottom SL braces. I would say leave a little longer between extractions to let the injection sites calm down (they were a bit sore in the roof of my mouth) and it was a bit full on with braces and big holes when it came to eating. 4 weeks on, everything is healing nicely and the braces have settled so have no pain now. Good luck!

good luck with everything! I had my braces put on about a month ago and I'm 40! I cannot believe I waited so long for something so easy to get!!!
I cannot believe I'll actually have perfect teeth in a few years.
I may get wrinkles but dang it, I'll have straight teeth till I die! :)
Those spacers do keep your teeth sore, don't they? My molars are still sore from the build up they did the other day. You'll finally get used to it though after a few months.

31 with braces here... I'm glad your boyfriend is supportive, but I agree that they can say some dumb things sometimes. :) Mine said he was worried I'd be more self-conscious with the braces on. Trust me - that would not have been possible! He also always says he didn't think I needed them (trust me, I do!) My dental issues sound very similar to yours). In any case, I'm so glad he was on board with me doing it anyway.

Well today was the day! I only got 4 brackets on top till my extractions. But they are tight! I know my biggest problem is going to be these molar bands!! I already can't stand them! I need to figure out how to post pics. I won't get the bottoms till my top is straightened out a little...but I'm excited!!!
