I got my upper braces on along with my bottom molar bands on yesterday. The only pain I have with the molar bands is, on all except 1, they are kinda too big. There is a space between the bands and my teeth. They filled them with the cement (that stuff tastes awful), but there is still the top edge of the band which both sides of my tongue are constantly rubbing against and feels like it is cutting up the sides of my tongue. There are also what feels like notches on the inside of them, which also rub.
It was not a problem until last night, and so I had planned on calling my ortho this morning, but then it seemed fine again this morning, until after lunch, now it is super irritating!!
I am just wondering if this is a normal thing, if anyone else has had this problem with their molar bands and if you were able to get it fixed? My poor tongue needs some relief as the wax won't stay on that side.

Chonie,
Unfortunately you will have to get use to them. Mine were the same way at first. As you stated the wax doesn't stay on real well. Over time your tongue will get use to them. The sharp edges on the sides are there to provide a place for them to grab onto for the molar band removal (I have had mine removed a few times for molds, not pleasant!) If your tongue is sore, rinse with warm salt water a few times a day, it does help.

I know exactly what you are talking about. I HAD to use wax to give my poor tongue a break. One of my molar bands felt like it had a razor sharp top edge and one (on the other side) felt like the bottom edge was away from the tooth and was sharp too!
What finally helped make the wax work: dry off the area as best you can and gob on a BIG piece of wax, molding it around the entire area. Then, don't mess with it at all. As it softens in the warmth of your mouth, it seems to mold better and better around the tooth by itself. Ah, my tongue was so happy to be away from the sharp edges that I didnt' mind having big bulges of wax in my mouth.
Unfortunately, you have to re-do the wax after you eat and brush but sometimes you just need RELIEF.
Somehow, your tongue does finally get used to it. I only used the wax for maybe 3 days. It doesn't feel like it gets cut up anymore.
Best of luck,
Pebs

Hello, The same thing happened to me. It was unbearable. After about a good week of suffering, I went back to my ortho and asked him if there was anything he could do. He looked and saw that girl that put them in didn't push the edges back inside like she was supposed to. He said the edges on the inside of your mouth don't need to be sticking out unless you need to wear elastics. So he took and tool and pushed the metal parts that were sticking out flush with my tooth, making it a smooth surface. It felt so much better.
Don't know if this is true for everyone, but you at least ask him. Good luck and hope I feel better soon!
