How do you eat Almonds with braces on?

#1 Post by JHova »

I've popped off a few brackets before on hard foods. Is it smarter to avoid things like almonds and nuts?

I've eaten almonds and nuts, always carefully, but they are just so prone to get stuck between wires, brackets and teeth that I just try to avoid them! I hate that feeling, and then I have to work hard to take out all the stuff!

I was told that I could eat what I wanted however, somethings like chips and nuts just be careful. I have eaten almonds and if you are careful it will be ok, but the cleaning up is quite the mess afterward.

If I know something is going to be hard like nuts, fruits, vegetables, candy, etc then I definitely avoid it. Even if it wasn't hard when you didn't have braces it doesn't mean it's not hard now. It's hard to get people that don't have braces to understand that. But then again maybe it's just me. My aunt has braces and will eat things that I can't eat because they're too hard. To each his own. But having that kind of stuff in wires and in between stuff is definitely not fun.

I put everything in a blender. I found out the other day you can make almond milk. Just soak the almonds, and then peel off the skin, and then put it in a blender with some water and the result is almond milk! I haven't tried it yet but I want to use it in a smoothie recipe.

Chips are fine... I have avoided nuts so far and the crusts of pizza.

You just need to eat things with caution. It's not difficult to take care when you're chewing. The only things I can't physically eat are very chewy toffee-type things, but then I don't eat those types of things anyway

I can't eat very hard foods after appointments, obviously, but other than that I'm fine. I have difficultly with apples and pears however, but this is because of my bad bite, rather than the braces

Swill afterwards to dislodge anything, brush your teeth if you want, and job's a good one. It's not that bad, really

I generally avoid almonds, specifically because they're so hard that it's difficult to gauge the amount of force it'll take to bite into one. Therefore, it's not worth the effort to me. Since there are so many other nuts that aren't a challenge to deal with, it hasn't been a problem.

What about walnuts? You could replace almonds with them.
08 Apr 2008 - Front teeth braced.
...
30 Aug 2010 - New bracket brand placed on upper four incisors.

Initial Ortho Sentence: 18-20 months.

Oh it's so not worth it!! :( Against advice (and all logic) I happily chomped down on Snickers with almonds. I didn't break anything but the fuss it took to clean up afterward took much much longer than I could ever imagine. I know that simple caution is advised but goodness it's easier to avoid sometimes!
