Hi AZWILDCATS- I had the EXACT same screws (4 on top, and 4 on bottom) put in to stabilize my bite and to "guide" my jaws together after my BSSO (I have invisalign instead of traditional braces) - 4 on the top, and 4 on the bottom.

I hope the pain meds work for you - - I also found that wax helped a LOT to prevent the screws from scratching up your lips.

... the hardest part was having them removed ... but it's short and quick, and the holes close up really fast!

Best of Luck for a speedy recovery :) You have a beautiful smile!

Thanks Cyn,

did you notice gum irritation? Not necessarily where the screws are but swelling in the gums... I'm starting to wonder if I am having some sort of allergic reaction.

I remember that my gums were tender in the areas where the rubber bands would "dig" into my gums. The bands were so tight that they were almost slicing into my gums.. so i put some cotton underneath those areas to act like a cushion.. I'm not sure if you have the same issue. I think my elastics were much thinner than yours though.

-it might be a good idea to call your surgeon if the swelling persists -- My surgeon recommended brushing the screws and gum area around them with a toothbrush so they are always clean, and of course salt water rinses always help too...

I hope you are able to resolve your issue with the swollen gums.. and hope it isn't too painful :(

So, I stopped using the Peridex mouth rinse on Friday and my gums have not been swollen or painful. Guess I was having some sort of reaction to it. Now I am just using Hydrogen Peroxide.

So now that we have seen the rigid wiring, does anyone have pics of their jaws actually wired shut?

My surgeon said they don't do the wiring shut like they use to anymore... because when you yawn, cough, sneeze - it causes too much pull on the teeth.

Also, these bands, do not move... I am unable to move my teeth/jaw in the slightest.

Now my gums are so swollen - they have swelled over the screws and bands and covered them completely.
