Fixed Retainer when braces off?

My ortho said when my braces come off (Likely in 3-4 months), he probably would need to put a fixed retainer on the back of the bottom teeth, because of the bone-loss-- he wants to ensure stability.

Is this sort of thing common, and has anyone else had any experience with this?

They are common. I know someone who has had a fixed lower retainer in for fifteen years and they've had no problems.
