Could this have been an oops?

#1 Post by khrystal1968 »

Last week I had 2 upper bicuspids extracted to make room. The ortho said it was an absolute must, although my top teeth were crooked but not as crooked as my bottoms. He told me I have a 13mm overbite which I find hard to believe because I can fully pull my lips over my teeth without straining. I have been so upset, I even had an ER visit for an anxiety attack. I look awful right now, and even though I lost no weight really, my face changed shape. Those roots on those teeth were REALLY long and I am wondering now if they were holding up my face. Anyways, yesterday I went to a REALLY good dentist for an opinion. He specializes in all kinds of dentistry. He does implants, he does ortho, etc. He supposedly is one of the best dentists in the area. He examined my mouth and made a measurement. He told me that if my ortho were to pull back these teeth as he plans it, it will go too far back and ruin my profile. I have a prominent nose and lips. My facial structure stands out. He says I should get another ortho right away, and that this will ruin my face further. He gave me stuff in writing, including a phone number in which I can possibly get my money back from the Dr Svengoolie, as I call him. What would you do in this case? He says I need reconstruction done. I am a mess. Advice from anyone here would be helpful. Thanks.

There's a thread just above called "how to post pictures" with details on how to.

Do you mean a 13mm overjet?

Here's someone with that, do your teeth look like this?

viewtopic.php?t=27246

What's your actual diagnosis, underdeveloped lower jaw or overgrown upper?

13mm overjet could be reduced quite satisfactorily with extractions. Happens all the time successfully. For good measure and peace of mind go to another ortho or take this up with your current orth and ask him/her to show you in simple English why and how your face won't "collapse". Take the generic dentists advice with a grain of salt, they're not qualified other than to suggest he can put implants in for half the price

There are tons of examples of in progress and finished results in the other forum of people who have had similar with fantastic results.

No need to get worked up over it all, just ask the ortho current ortho straight up or go and see a few more.

Looked at the pics, my overjet or whatever you call it does not look like that. It is not as prominent. I just feel that my ortho could have tried a different approach other than pulling my teeth, thats all.

i would have definitely ask for a 2nd ortho's opinion. Teeth does give your face structure. A lot of people will say otherwise but from my own experience, a few millimeters of tooth movement will give your face a different look. Think of old people and how their face collapses when they take their dentures out.

I would look into a 2nd opinion and maybe even switching orthos if you say your overbite wasn't even that bad to begin with.
