lower jaw surgery horror stories

#1 Post by emma33uk »

had my surgery done on the 23rd may 2008, i looked like the elepant woman for ages. any way i had to have my left side redone a week later as one of the metal plates was apprently bent in recovery. well over a year later, i still look like the elephant woman, i have the most horrific infection in both sdes, i have a peice of sharp pointy bone and half a metal plate growing out of my left lower gum (its got ittlle gold screws!!) i have been back to the hospital twice over the last few months, saw some kind of junior doctor, who told me to rince my mouth out with salt water, and on my next visit i had to ask for antibiotics, not that i havent taken enough over the past year. it seems the surgeon was too tied up too see me, yet i had a room full after he had done the work before the complications set in, so he could show off!!! any way i take it my body has rejected the metal plates, thats why its growing out my gum and is embeding itself in my cheek. i have done everything i was told to after this surgery, im a quilified dental nurse, so am fully aware of dental hygine issues. so i have to ask myself was it all worth it, im sure i am just one of the unlucky ones, i am also seriously thinking about compensation.....i look like a monster, i have so much internal scaring that my face may never go down. well just wondering if anyone else has any horror stories?????

I'm so sorry that has happened to you. I know there are a couple of people here who had bad experiences so hopefully they will chime in and give you some advice.
Many blessings to you and prayers that you will get this issue fixed soon.

emma33uk - What you're going through is just unthinkable to be honest. - In my view, you need to be seen by someone soon and it needs to be someone who can sort this. Can you get a private appointment organised with another surgeon - I notice you are in the UK. There are people here who've had surgery done with very respected surgeons in the UK and if you need to get recommendations, etc. I dont' think you should let this go on any longer - for your general health but also because it is just NOT acceptable - no way! :x If you want to pm me I can give you some names that were passed on to us. My daughter had to have her surgery repeated (first surgery Dec 08 and second surgery July 09). So we've some experience of things not going as they should. Please let us know if we can be of any help.

Love and prayers. God bless xx

my surgeon works for the NHS her name is Ms Caroline Mills, she came to see me in her own time at the orthodontics private clinic before i enrolled on treatment. I can honestly say she was fantastic and if you need a second opionion i would say she may be worth calling.

She does all the ops in a hospital called northwick park in harrow, im not sure if this will help u at all but i would try anything if i was u hunny sounds painfull what you are going through and doesnt sound as if your gettign the care u need x

I know how it feels to have things go very wrong so my sympathies are with you.

I had my BSSO done 18 months ago now and my blog detailing all this should be at the bottom of my post.

Please get in touch if you have any questions or want to talk to someone else who knows how your feeling.

Havent been on here for AGES as after everything that happend i wanted to be well away from this subject for abit!

hello there..
could you pm me the details to ....
would really be thankful for your help...
i have done a post about my story called ''my ortho story''dont know how to link..
looking at some peoples bad experiences really worry me when i consider this treatment... but the way i feel with my smile... i will do anything and if jaw surgery is the only option then i will go ahead with it...
i am awiting my hosptial date for appointment with a ortho and a surgeon at my local hosptial... i do worry if i get refused as i am aware They will have measured the distance by which your jaws don't meet, and if it is a certain degree or higher, they will carry out the treatment free on the NHS.. did you pay for your treatment?
my ortho said i have a good case..but it dont stop me from worrying x
