Huge gap in front two teeth

If you have finished with your orthodontic treatment and are wearing retainers (or will be soon), this is a special place to connect with others in your (enviable) situation. Ask a question or make a comment about life post-braces.

Huge gap in front two teeth

#1 Post by changes09 »

Pre-braces I had a huge gap in the middle of my two front teeth. I am not getting my braces off till December ***knock on wood*** And I was wondering since I had such a huge gap would a perminent retainer be a better choice? But the way that my teeth are sitting I feel like my lower six teeth will hit the retainer.
The only thing my ortho has said so far about retainers, is that when they take the impressions, they give me an essix style retainer that same day (they make it in there lab) untill my other retainers....I think its the Hawley...The regular retainer you see most 7th graders wear. I'm guessing this is just his retainer of choice. I dont care what type of retainer I have...I just dont want my teeth to shift....I don't want that gap back, you know.

I had a big gap before braces and my ortho knew from the beginning that he would have to put a permanent retainer/bridge behind my 2 front top teeth to prevent them from ever shifting. I've had my braces off for 2 weeks and no issues or discomfort so far.

Hi :-1 I had a 4.5 mm gap and I have a permanent retainer behind the two front teeth and also wear a hawley every night. I thought the same as you, this guy will never get a permanent wire to fit. Lo and behold, the wires are so thin it went in without a hitch. Took about 3 days before my tongue decided it wasnt a carnival ride and now i have ABSOLUTELY no problem with having the permanent retainer.
